Topic: Whats tools areneeded for an engine swap? Posted: 22 September 2008 at 9:58pm |
Im going to start getting parts/tools together to complete a 3800 swap, i know the parts needed, but what about tools? I have alot of the basic tools, but what other things will i need. Im trying to do this as cheap as possible so minimal tools. I think the biggest would be an engine hoist? If anyone knows where i can get some of these tools on the cheap, that'd be great.
edit: Also, can anyone suggets a good starter welder? Ive always wanted to learn, now might be a good time. Id like something suitable for making an exhaust etc.. Edited by kawana |

best investment I think in doing an engine swap is deffinatly an aircompresser and impact gun+sockets as for the engine hoist, you dont need one ( i saw a guy on pennocks do it with a comealong strung between 2 trees) but it will make life easier as for inexpensive places, craigslist, kms, and if your feeling brave/stupid princess auto the welder i use is a millermatic 135 and its a great little welder thats good for general shop use. |

Engine pulls can be done with jack stands and floor jack. Hoist makes it easier but not needed.
Air tools and a compressor are my #1 tools I use for doing engine work. Even a cheep compressor will usually do ya. #300 for compressor and if you watch the sales, Master craft had a 300 gun set on sale for 89 bucks. Other assorted tools, gear wrench's are great. MUST have lots of extensions, 1/2" drive at least 24" of it if not 36" CV Shaft socket, 30 or 32mm depending of you have original or not. If you are locally you can come borrow mine as that single socket can be $40 Couple of cheap propane torches , about 15 bucks each at CDN Tire. You best bet is to watch the CDN Tire / Princess auto sale flyer's and but when the stuff goes on sale. Lisa and I have saved thousands of dollars buying GOOD tools on sale. Don't even wast your time if it is made by Job Mate, or other "No Name" brand sockets. Cordless drill can come in handy for removing all those Little nuts and bolts and screws in a hurry. There are tons of tools that you will need, best bet is to make sure you have the common tools, large sockets and ratchets and then move from there. Between Lisa's tool box and air tools and My Tool Box and Air Tools, we end up using $5000 worth of assorted tools when we are doing a swap. Jack Stands are a serious must GOOD large HYD FLoor Jack are a must Assorted deep and shallow sockets are a MUST Elbows and swivel head adapters for the sockets are also a must. If you have not seen my tranny swaps on PFF let me know and I will find the links. |

Kinda reminds me of the time we used a big tree and a cum-a-long to pull the frame straight on Armintas car out at a tech session at Blair's. I think I still have the video for that one.

Lol, thats one way to do it :D I was expecting the tire iron to go flying out :S Im gunna be going to the flea market tomorrow, so hopefully ill be walking away with a few tools. First major thing i wanna get is a hoist, then a small compressor/tools, and other misc things. I hope to have all the parts for a swap before the winter weather comes rolling in. On that note, apparently its gunna get up to like 30* on monday :D Guess summers not quite done yet ;)
