AP Int (c):
The ICDT (international console dig team) today unearthed a massive stash of ancient coins today, while doing restorative and modification work to a classic 1986 Fiero GT. The car, while originally a Muncie 4 speed, was being converted to a far better geared Getrag 5 speed. This modification, while not keeping the car in line with it's RPO sticker sheet, is still close enough so as not to upset the dictatorship of ICBC during any routine inspections for what is known as 'collector plates'. The team reported that they were initially unaware of any treasures to be found, but were pleasantly surprised on removal of the shifter assembly. "Cool!" one was heard to express. "I can afford a LARGE timmies, and MAYBE a doughnut!" another supposedly said. These reports are unconfirmed at this time though. Rumors are the massive stash consists of: 3 toonies 2 looines 2 quarters 3 dimes 5 nickels and 11 (yes you heard right!) pennies! Some of them date back as far as 1985, indicating the length of time they could have been buried there. They are all Canadian though, so it's unlikely they were there from the time of TOB (the original build). Reporters are standing by to bring you the latest details as they arrive. |

this is just frickin hilarious, as just in the past week, i put my fiero up on jackstands (also an 86), started doing a bunch of work, including removing seats and console. i found aproximately the same amont of coin under the seat and in around the shifter assy.
no lie. g |

I'm disappointed. The Fiero that I recently swapped in a 5-speed required me to change the shifter, thus disassembling the entire console. I only found 57 cents! No wonder 84's aren't as popular!

Not me - these had all been in there for some time.
I don't smoke, and nobody that I know who's owned the car smokes - but there was about a 1/4" deep layer of ash down there, and most of them were buried. But anyhow, yeah, a lot of people toss coins in the ashtrays. Sometimes they miss, or you go over a bump and they fall into the console. It's also hard to pull the trays out without tipping them a bit, so I'm sure that dumps a few. Over the years they just pile up. |

Yeah, it's pretty disgusting taking the console apart and finding a stack of petrified cigarette butts dating back to the 1980's.

In one of the cars I was stripping out the coins had made their way under the carpets from there also. I had 1 car yield me almost 26$ in coins by the time I was done cleaning it all out. Coins can also roll right to the very front of the console. Wasnt too bad when I only paid 100$ for the car. Its interesting to see what all sorts of buried treasure one finds in a parts car.

It wasn't a parts car, but when I stripped the interior of my girlfriend's '86 Volvo wagon to clean it out I found a crack pipe. [EDIT] Perhaps I better make it absolutely clear that I was cleaning out the Volvo shortly after my girlfriend had bought it. It was NOT her crack pipe!
