Got to change the fuel pump in my GT,i pulled the filter off to pump out the
old gas in the tank,an the line is pluged!, can't get any flow throught the line that goes to the tank allso i don't here the fuel pump spinning up! fuse is good an relay is good,so iam assuming its the pump. the tank has to come off,any tips on changing the fule pump from somone that has done this. thanks |

#1 tip, buy the fuel pump for the 88 V6 GT/Formula its a much better pump. Better flow, less noisy and I think even costs a few bucks less than the early Fiero one as GM used it everything from the Corvette to the Big Block 454 (I think 7.4L V8) trucks. Jack the rear of the car up,and get under there its a fairly easy job, Lisa did her's with my help in less than an hour. You'll need a 13mm shallow socket a deep 13mm and a deep 15mm, plus assorted screw drivers to remove the hoses. |

Thanks dave,i took your advise in the beginning an got myself a doner car to
pull parts from,so i wounder if i can just pull the other tank outa the other car an put it in,witch two wires power up the pump?color?or just buy a new pump @ lordco an put it in this tank, how much$ for an 88 pump. thanks |

i would personaly just buy the new one at lordco beacuse even though it is not that big a job, it is not one that you want to do twice close togeather, you never know the condition of the pump in the donor car.. and for the piece of mind.. it is worth it to just get a new one.. which is about $150 for a ac delco and put a new sock/strainer ($15) on it too while you are in there

And to make the job MUCH easier, pull out the 4 tiny screws that hold the heat shield down and remove it.
When I had a bad batch of pumps, I had it down to about 20 min's total to swap the pump. :) |

Thanks for the tips guys,it all worked out just like Dave said,it was a big
help just knowing what tools to have on hand,it wasn't the first tank ive changed a tank,won't be the last,this car has bin sitting for a while an has skunk gas in it,just woundering about the fule rails/injectors an how to wash them out or just what to look at? lots of good advise here.Thanks |

Personally unless the gas is 10 years old, I would just let it run through. Many a person has let a Fiero sit for several years and ran the old gas until they could get some fresh stuff in it. Hell the gas in my V8 Fiero has not been filled for at least 4 years.
If you really want to purge it, aside from removing the entire fuel rail, your only option is to remove the schrader valve in the fuel rail. (under the plastic cap near the the coolant cap, in the fuel rail) Then unscrew the schrader same thing as a tire valve schrader. Put a hose on it, feed that hose into a jar or bottle then cycle the key on and off a few times. At the least that will dilute the old gas in the rail and purge the lines. |

Hay just s thought! what outer car crosses over for the fule pump in the
2.8 Fiero.don't have $130 for a new one.so pick a part for $19.99 looks vary good.in a regular car the fule tank is on a cupple of straps that can be cut with snips quick,i can pull a tank in about 2 min,snip the fule lines an test the pump with a boster Batt that i bring.so i might have to pull a few tanks to find a good pump?what outher cars have the same pump?is this list rite? Don't bother with the early pumps, go with the 88 pump, it is WAY more common, and a better pump, I am sure I have the interchange around here someplace. |

HI All,well i got the pump in an purged the fuel rails with fresh fuel,so far
so good,this car was sitting for a few years-87 White GT/Auto-2.8 stock.when i bought it he said it had a bad valve,OK i can fix that.so when i got it fired up,yea its got a bad lifter,rocker? somthing in the top end is knocking,for sure valve train,so i pulled the plugs an found the CYL that is the problm-#No 1 .ive got to pull the intake off an thats where i need some pointers,the doos an don'ts of this job would be a great help.it does run vary smooth even with a sloppy lifter,i was surprised,i did try the snake oil thing with a little diesel fuel mixed in,an it did quiet down quite a bit,but didn't compltey go away,not sure,it could be a rod or piston, gotta come apart! any help would be great,thanks |

Update-well i got it apart!-UGLY! a bad rod, the engine is junk! so i guess
iam dropping the cradle.i found a 3.1 block that will work.i looked at a 90 LUMNIA today with a 3.1 in it ,but the top end was a lot differnt,ALUM heads an 6 pack coils SYS, an intake was differnt allso,so i would have to strip the 3.1 down to a short block an then bolt all my 2.8 Fiero top end back on it?is that how that works,an droping the cradle,how hi do you have to get the back of the car off the ground to clear everything,any advise would be grate!<"19_224303_PDR_0014.JPG"> |
