I had a complete brake job done (new calipers, rotors, and all the associated parts) about 6 weeks ago.  Now I notice a ring of rust on the rotors (about 3/8 of an inch wide, around the complete outer face of the rotors). I've eyeballed other disk brake setups, and the faces of the rotors all seem to be clean. Is this normal for Fieros?

The person who did the brakes says it is because we don't take the Fiero out that much (only about 2 or 3 short trips a week).

I'm planning on being at the meeting this Saturday, so maybe someone can take a peek at them.

Thanks

I'm not exactly expert on brakes but once new brakes are installed, they need to be worn in so that the pads seat properly.   Once seated, the pads are always rubbing against the rotor and this rubbing should keep the rotor surface clean and it should not rust.  The part of the rotor where the pads do not rub will rust a bit.

Even after a car wash, if you don't drive your car, a layer of rust will form on the rotor surface.

If you have a ring of rust in the rubbed area or your rotor, it is possible that the pads have not seated properly.

Somebody who knows brakes better than I should correct me if I'm wrong.

The outter ring of rust is normal due to the Pads do not touch the entire surface of the rotor.  Its a normal thing.   As for rusting up, even 24hrs of sitting can cause a rotor to get a slight buildup of run on the surface.

Thanks for the info guys.  It makes me feel a bit more secure to know it is a normal thing.
