I noticed when the outside temperature dropped the last few days that it was taking quite awhile for my GT to warm up. The idle speed also remained quite high. It never really did warm up properly and my gas mileage, as bad as it always is, was even worse than usual. So, I decided to pull the thermostat and have a look... The thermostat looked fine so I put it back in. Any other suggestions what might be wrong?

Just replaced the one on Shirley's car today, along with the heater core. She blew the heater core on Trans Canada this morning, so once we got the car home, did a complete overhaul on the entire cooling system, including replacing a badly bent thermostat. Not as bad as yours, but plenty twisted.

Uri Geller is making a comeback. The long "arms" are simply bending from water pressure pushing against them when the coolant is cold and the thermostat valve is closed. Cheap thermostats like the one pictured above can often bend. Better ones (like the Stant SuperStat® I replaced it with) won't. By the way, I worked out the mileage for my last tankful of gas before I replaced the bent thermostat... 13.5 mpg!

For anyone who's interested, the part number for a Stant SuperStat® 195°F thermostat for a Fiero is 45819 The current price at Lordco is $13.99 (with our club discount). |

It must be your driving style. ![]() drive in the city in a manner suited to better fuel economy in a fiero, you end up holding up traffic which is comprised of mostly peppy and efficient vehicles that can jack rabbit start and accelerate much quicker - not too mention the much faster pace that wreaks havoc on fiero efficiency and don't forget all those people who care not for fuel consumption hence the faster pace. |
