Hi all

i made this up yesterday for checking throtle position sensor ohms or voltage. im sure some one else has already thought of this but i thought i'd share it anyway.

you can get pretty much everything you need for 8 bucks at Lordco.

ask for PICO # 2161-14. you should have the special GM or "amp" crimp tool but if you dont you can substitute solder.

You can also just buy the Pico plug with the pigtails already installed.  Trim up as required (they're rather long!) and solder away.

ps. if you don't want to do any of the above, you can always try asking real nice and I'll hook my scan tool up to your car and you can just read the values off that.  ;)

I have a couple of old think pads with 9 pin serial ports. is it possible to get the software from somewhere? also i assume you need some sort of adaptor harness for the hook up?

Software is free from here, http://winaldl.joby.se/  I have a cable here that a Chay Foss an island member donated, he actually donated 2 however one is on loan to Austin at the moment, I believe he even explains on the above mentioned site on how to build the cable.  You can also buy USB/Com adapter cables to run the software on newer laptops that don't have com ports.

Glenn, I got my ALDL cable from Dodgerunner at PFF. You can read about these cables Here. He's a good guy to deal with if you wish to buy one. $27 shipped (in the US).

In regards to using USB ports, I feel it's only fair to point out is that there are mixed reviews with using a serial to USB adaptor with these cables and WinALDL. Too many people have reported that serial/USB adaptors do not work properly with this application. I'd advise anyone to save themself a lot of potential grief and only use a laptop equipped with a serial port when running WinALDL.

And don't forget to download ALDLView as I posted a while back in another thread...

This is a great little utility for anyone running WinALDL.

I don't know about why people had issue using an apadater, I have used adapters on several laptops here, including Nigels who brought over a newer laptop and it was all plug and play.   Maybe I'll have to dig up the brand adapter I am using and post it up.

guys thanks for all the info! i surely will put it to good use. I will be going the old laptop route, because-

1) i have two of em, gereat for banging around a shop-

2) my experience with software and adaptors and such is that they always work best on the hardware and operating systems they were designed for

3) that having been said, I can say that from my experience at Cummins, the early USB/serial adaptors were pretty much useless, so if your experience was when they first came out, it would be negative. My understanding is that they work much better now.

i wish i new about Winaldl a week ago before i started this saga.

What does ALDLview do?

Didn't you click on the link I provided earlier?

It allows you to view the data you acquire with WinALDL on a graph. Very very helpful.

just went on the site and tried to download Win ALDL, and my antivirus program flashed up a virus warning- TR/dropper.Gen  trojan.

does this mean anything to any of you computer gurus out there ?

is it possible that my anti vir program is just misinterpreting this?

i left the owner of the web page a note..

Glenn, you didn't say where exactly you were downloading winaldl_109f.exe from, but if it's from the official site there's nothing wrong with the file. I downloaded and scanned it today with Avast anti-virus and it's fine.

Agreed with Patrick, don't grab stuff from 3rd party places, and if in doubt, skip the file and look for a different download place.   I'd suggest testing the file in a VM box but that is kinda geeky and not an easy task.
