my 86 GT has got some serious problems. every morning when
i first start it up, it starts and then dies immeadiatly.
then when it starts running i have to hold the rpms way
up(approx 2500-2700). Then the choke will stay on all the
time and the check engine light stays on. Also im getting
terrible fuel mileage, its down to 64 kms for half a tank
of gas, and im doing normal city driving and not racing
around at all. any help would be great, thanks

Alright brother, this is a job for le scan tool.

PS, there's no choke on a fuel injected vehicle, the ECM just runs open-loop for the first minute or so.

Never shift into reverse without a back-up plan.

Sounds like your IAC is acting up, or you have a leaking
injector causing the engine to flood on fire up and the
IAC can't deal with it.

If you can make it over here, today, Friday or make
it to the meet tomorrow, I can bring the club scan tool
and we can see whats going on.

64kms on 1/2 tank of gas, the engine must be pouring fuel
in, either from a bad injector, busted vacuum line to the
fuel pressure regulator or bad O2 sensor. Everything can
be sorted out with a scan tool. However sounds like no
matter what the problem is, you will need to buy some
parts.

As a test, get the car out onto the freeway and run
it up to 120kph, and see if the fuel mileage improves.
I'll almost bet money that at a highway cruise your gas mileage goes back to normal. Its just in town stop and
go traffic that you are burning a lot of fuel. If the O2
sensor is shot, you can almost meter fuel by the hour
rather than by the miles.   When my O2 sensors on my V8
were bad, I would get 2hrs of run time on a full tank,
didn't matter if that 2hrs was in traffic and only went
10kms or if I was FOOT TO THE FLOOR doing 200kph it got
the same amount of fuel burned.

If you have a bad injector, I would be very careful driving the car. That's one way of getting an engine fire and we wouldn't want to exasperate that myth of a reputation Fieros have.

Could be the TPS Sensor. I hear those are causing idle issues, right Doc?

could be, and some how, the car fixed itself cause the idle
has dropped atleast 700 rpm to a tolerable level, not
perfect but much better
