I am having problems with my clutch system. I bled it as
much as i could and after some pumping the pedal got stiff but it wouldnt disengage the clutch all the way, while in the drive way i could make it roll while in 3rd and 4th with the clutch in, but 2nd and 1st wouldnt. So the clutch is not disengaging all the way... how do i fix it, could it be a leaking slave or master, or worn linkage or pedal stuff? The clutch system worked fine before the engine swap, and o didnt touch it, except bleed it. Please help! |

My guess is that either the pressure plate on the new engine requires more movement than the stock engine's did to fully disengage, or that the pressure plate is stiffer and blew the slave seals. Check the boot of the slave for fluid. If you find any, the slave cylinder is dead. Also, have someone operate your clutch while you look at the slave. If the rod moves, it's the pressure plate. If the rod doesn't move, the problem lies ahead of the slave. |

Along with it simply moving - how FAR is it moving?
Need someone with a steady hand to hold a ruler by the edge of the release arm, roughly at the level of the pushrod. Step on the clutch to the floor and see how much travel there is. You could have a combo problem too: Thick floor mats Bent clutch pedal Air in the lines Sloppy pedal bushing These things can all add up to a failure to release. |

One thing I noticed is the Bracket design for the slave is quite flimsy at best. When I got my car it was cracked and with 'Newton's 3rd Law' thing I could not achieve a clutch release. So before fixing the bracket I just tried putting a brace between the slave and the tranny housing to stop the flex and voila the clutch disengaged. So if a person had a stronger clutch that required more push to release it may (I say may) cause more flex of the stock aluminum bracket and shorten the effective reach of the slave cylinder push rod. cheers |

Oh yes, the good Doctor and Kevin both have very important points I missed. On a related note to Kevin's: If the bracket appears cracked - don't push your luck with it. Mine shattered on Scott Road, and as a result, I had no gears.

What about loosing pressure overnight? What would cause
that. |

Sounds like a leak to me. Look for wet-spots under the car.

I think the slave is the problem, there was a small puddle
directly under the line in the engine bay. But it seems to be leaking from the bleeder or the line connection, not where the rod sticks out. I think im going to tighten the bleeder and line and see what happens. Oh and another thing, i pushed on the rod (towards the slave) and its not stiff, if i keep pushing it keeps going in with only some resistance, but as soon as i let go it goes out. |

That's normal...but you really need to stop doing that. You probably let tons of air in when you did that.
The rod will get hard only when you push on the clutch pedal and seal off the master cylinder. Now you need to bleed it all again. The Dawg |

Ok, now i think its the master. when the peddle is all the
way in the slave only moves 3/8 inch. and no matter what i do the peddle wont get stiff till half way in. Should i replace it? |

Unless it's leaking fluid under your carpet it's almost surely ok. Air in the system will do this. Bleed it good.
Find a power bleeder and give it a damn good blast. The Dawg |

Theres some fluid on the carpet... not much but definitely
some. I think ill go with replacing the master. I just dont know why it was working before the swap but not now... |

One drop is one drop too much. Get a new one. MAKE SURE you also now pull the carpeting back in that area, and clean it really well to remove all traces of fluid - clean off the now damaged paint, clean it again, then rust proof it. You'll have a hole in your floor there by next year otherwise. |
