Hi Keith,
There's so much you can do to that car you won't believe it. How many miles on the car? The Dawg |

Well the 1st thing you want to do is find out what 4spd you have in it. There were 2 4spds in 84 the "Sport and the Econo" The sport was great for the duke in town, made it fairly quick, however would redline at I think 140-150kph. The Econo was a great highway trans, and good on gas, however was rather poor for acceleration due to the really tall gearing. The V8 guys like to find those Econo trans and use them behind big torquy V8's so don't garbage it if you have the Econo. The Performance 4spd can be kept with the car or sold to the higher reving V6 guys. You can then either swap in the later model 5spd Isuzu or the middle of the road 4spd known as the 3.65 which is also twice as strong as the 84 4spd trans. If you plan to drive the car hard, I would really recommend getting the 3.65 4spd as it moves your top end to around 160 or so, however still keeps the car peppy in town, plus is nearly indestructible behind the duke.

160? David... I've gone over 200 with it... It's a fairly tall set-up.

Not with 92 bhp that the duke has you havn't or with an engine that has a yellow line on the tach at 4500 or 5000rpm with an engine redline only 500 rpms over that. With the 4.10 the engine / car runs out of its power band with the 3.65 it can hold its power band a few hundred extra rpms. The 84 duke has a hard time getting past 140 with any trans. However the 3.65 is its best bet, and close behind is the Isuzu 5spd. In some respects the 5spd is better at keeping the motor in its comfort range during normal driving, however when it comes to 4spds, the 3.65 is the best bet.

Wow man, that's a lot of miles for a Duke. It's very likely that your motor is worn out. Check it out before spending any money on that motor.
As far as the chassis goes though, it's just getting warmed up....:) Cheers, The Dawg |

Thanks for the info everyone! Currently working on getting it running properly. When I picked this car up it wouldn't start, but I got that figured out. It just dies now unless i keep my foot on the gas. It was sitting for a while from what the previous owner says. After I get it running propperly I'll start working on the suspension, brakes and steering. Not to worried about the motor though might get a swap in a year or two as the duke is not gonna get the power i want. I just wanna have some fun in it this summer so the motor is staying in it till all the suspension, brakes and what not get updated. |

One more thing. If your 84 Fiero is not your only car and it is not your daily driver (you will not be driving to work or school with it), once you fix it up in factory stock condition and slap on a decent paint job (original colour only), your car could qualify for collector plates which should allow you to drive your car for about $300 a year.
However, once you swap in a motor that is other than the 4 cyl, it no longer qualifies. |
