Beginning yesterday, my GT started making a new somewhat high-pitched whistling noise from the back. The noise only comes on when the car is near idle or at low rpm. What could this be? And how serious a problem is it? Thanks guys.

Could be a vacuum leak, failing alternator bearing, something rubbing on a belt or pulley...

The best way to track down a noise/sound in the engine compartment is to use a mechanic's stethoscope. I bought mine at Princess Auto within the last couple of years for less than 10 bucks. Works fantastic.

I kick myself for not buying one when I first started working on cars almost 40 years ago!
