Hello,
Just out of curiosity, when I set my Fiero on drive it idles at 750 rpm (this is without acceleration) and when I throw in to park mode it idles at 1000/1100 rpm (1100 dips ever few seconds to 1000 and audibly you can notice the engine sound when this happens). Given my provided description of my Park Idle, does it sound good, or even healthy for that matter? Thanks! |

Yes. When in gear, some torque is absorbed by the torque converter bringing the engine to what old school mechanics call low-idle. Low idle would be what a manual transmission Fiero would idle at in neutral.
For an automatic transmission car, in neutral or park, the engine is allowed to idle freely so without the torque converter absorbing some of that torque, the engine will idle around 1000 rpm. When the engine is cold, the ECU will make the engine run a bit rich until the engine warms up a bit. Your idle will be a bit higher....maybe around 1200rpm until it warms up. |
