As some of you know from my build thread I am swapping out my 6 this summer. The problem is I cant get through aircare at the moment.
I am already on the 3 month extension, and it runs out in less than 2 months. I really would like to have my aircare ticket for another year before I do the v8 swap. This way I can get insurance for it as soon as its in so I can tune everything and take my time with it before having to go back to aircare. It failed NOX. And burns oil when I start it up in the morning... although I dont think thats contributing to the NOX. EGR tube is my gut instinct. I dont want to bring it into my mechanic for testing and whatnot...because the 6 is coming out soon anyways. So what can I do for a quick fix? |

If it's burning a LOT of oil, that can cause build up in the chambers.
That'll increase the CR effectively, and can bump up NOX. You can also check your base timing, and take it back like 4*. It'll run worse, but it might drop the NOX level down. Run a full tank of mohawk 94 (or whatever there top stuff is) through it, then a day before you go for the test add a bottle of methyl hydrate to the tank. If you've got a cat still in it, make sure the car has run for about 45 min's before the test. Jack up your rear tires to about 45-50psi for the test (then reduce them right after!!!!!!!!!!!!). A bottle of GM engine top end cleaner might be a good plan too. Do it out in an empty field or something - it's stinky and smokey - your neighbors WILL hate you. |

Also, make sure your car is good and warmed up before going to aircare. I usually take it for a highway run before doing.

Everything the good Dr said is right on the money. Like Dr and Ken said make sure the car is warmed up.
I have mananged to get Fiero's through, wtih no cat, no EGR system and lots of other mods. The only one I got stuck on was Lisa's automatic for some reason it just would not pass until we replaced the injectors and installed a temporary catyl converter on it. It still had no EGR system on it though. |

Actually, if you have an automatic, the shift points are tied to the ECU where it takes measurements from a variety of places so I am assuming, exhaust and other pollution gadgets might be a place to take them. I noted that the upshift indicator (for us manual transmissioned cars) would adjust the shift points depending on how you were driving. If you were really hoofing it, the upshift might not come until redline (I tried this). If you are really gingerly driving to save fuel, the upshift comes up just over 1200 rpm sometimes. So I take it that the measures are taken where emissions are also. But far more critical for an automatic transmissioned car. This might explain Lisa's car's issues.
