Anyone know what would need to be done to add the factory sub to a car that didn't come with one? Does it even give enough bass to make it worth while? I just want a little thump, and rodney dickman has a replacement sub for like $30.. Does anyone have a factory enclosure they might wanna sell? I would just go all out and buy a bigger sub, and mount it behind the seat.. but then id want new speakers.. then id need an amp.. now were up to like $500+, and im trying to do this on the cheap..

Pick up one of those 6" bass tubes.
The ones I've seen fit nicely behind the seat at the bottom, and give reasonable bass. Don't even bother with the factory setup unless you've already got it. It was good.... back in the day... but that's about it. |

ya, ditto.. with the canadian dollar so low, its too expensive to buy online. Do you know any local places that would have them? Do they need a separate amp??

The Factory sub system, is great. Although I would not go out and pay the prices for the entire system. Which is a factory amp, factory sub control that goes in the overhead control and then the factory enclosure. I love the one in my 88GT. I would still be using it, except the speaker started to rattle so I installed an 8" ADS Comp sub with a 400w MTX amp. The oem is nice as there are no extra wires, everything is made for the car and you don't even know it is there until you turn the stereo up and get that extra fullness. Last time I heard a complete system with all the related parts was around $500.
I can take pics of mine so you have an idea what the oem box looks like, it fits under the dash perfectly has 2 bass ports so the driver and passenger get even feel from the enclosure. The slider in the top will be hard to replicate and the OEM amp is nearly impossible to find. |

That's the nice thing about bazooka tubes. They generally have amps built in. So it's just a matter of wiring power, ground, remote wire, and rca's or speaker wires. I have an 8" tube in my other car and there is NO WAY it would fit behind the seat of my Fiero. So I'm curious about a 6" that would. Edited by Matt |

I've got a non-amplified one here you can have for $40. Not super powered, but does the job. If you don't have a bridgeable amp kicking around, hit up Walmart. They've got a bunch of 'economy' model amps there that work fine and dandy. |

Another alternative for anyone who never had the factory sub, and stores things under their seat (as I do) is the JL Audio TW5 Shallow Subwoofer. It's 2.5" think, meaning it will easily fit behind the driver and passenger seats, pack 600W RMS and aims the bass literally through you. Right now I'm working on a .44 Cubic Foot enclosure, which I'll be happy to make for anyone else if they're interested.

Never shift into reverse without a back-up plan.
