Before any one asks this is not a thread about mexican food.  I am supposed to only use premium fuel in my V8 (GM zz383 crate motor).  For some reason in the past I vaguely remember someone telling me to use Mohawk gas with the 10% ethanol since it keeps everything clean.  I thought it was a great deal since I was paying the same amount for 94 octane at Mohawk that I would be paying for premium (usually 91 octane) at other gas stations.  After reading Capt. Fieros postings from his trip to Oregon I am reconsidering my choice.  So what does the group think what would be the best gasoline (Petrocan Chevron etc. ) for me to use.

Hugh, I recommend you buy your gas at the Superstore pumps 'cause then you get a five cents per litre rebate to use in the store.

Capt Fiero has always told me to steer away from Mohawk gas. As a BCAA member if I use Mohawk I get points to rebate my next years annual fee.

Blair had also suggested I run a higher grade as much as possible.

I have a Shell station near my home address and find their fuel good. Although they seem to be the first fuel company to raise prices for the weekend. If I am out around Port Coquitilam area I use my Costco card. The Gas prices are very cheap there. Patrick has reminded me that it's also worth getting a Superstore card. Although I'm not sure if anyone has any idea of the quality of their fuel?

I think there is a website that gives you up to date prices on fuel in the Lower mainland. I even looked on iphone applications but nothing there at present to help identify the best deals at any given time.

Nigel, just a clarification... It's not necessary to have a Superstore "card" to buy their gas and/or get the rebate for store use.

I've been using their gas (because I grocery shop at Superstore on the Grandview Hwy in Vancouver) since they opened 15(?) years ago. I've never had a problem with their gas, although I should mention that I always buy Regular gas and therefore have no idea on the quality of their Premium gas (compared to anybody else's Premium gas) for high compression/performance engines.

Superstore obviously doesn't have their own refinery, so they're simply buying it from Shell or Chevron or Petrocan or whoever.

Its estimated that all over the world that 1 billion people have already done this as the largest global expression of the need to address global warmin. We are almost the last time zone.

No.........from my balcony I saw some of the lights turn off in downtown. Even the Lions gate bridge lights went off.

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Millions of people around the world have already turned off their lights to mark Earth Hour and tonight it will be Vancouver's turn.  The global initiative, Earth Hour, is meant to highlight the threat of climate change.

Since Earth Hour kicked off in 2007 for the first time in Sydney, Australia, almost 4,000 cities and towns in 88 countries have jumped on board.  The plan is to dim non-essential lights between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., time zone by time zone.

The impression I am gettting so far is that it doesn't matter where you buy your gas since the quality of the gas is the same.  Just go where it is cheapest. Does anyone know why Captain Fiero recommends against Mohawk gas?

Chevron AFAIK still has the highest octane you can get at the pump (vs. like C12 race gas or AvGas!).

I run there 94 in my truck (~10.5:1 CR 350).

I just wanted to pop in and Clarify something.   For Aircare purposes, and if you have a high compression engine, Mohawk can be the best fuel to use.  However the Mohawk 94 has the lowest power output per liter of fuel.     EPA Standards in Oregon even state a 3-5% reduction in fuel economy is normal when using the Ethanol screwed up fuel.

          I run Mohawk in my Caddy V8 and it is great, the Caddy motor from the Factory is suppose to run Premium, as the timing / fuel curve and compression does warrant it.   The fuel injection is also much more capable of dealing with the Ethanol fuel than the Fiero's fuel injection system.

                In the case of people running, high compression V8's, boosted V6's or even late model high compression V6's the Mohawk is fine, but if you are a stock 86-88 V6 with 8.5-1 compression and stock timing, you will actually see a reduced power and reduced fuel economy.

Its 10% here and from the people I have spoke to, feel that the fuel milage is actully closer to 10% loss in milage.

I wonder if there's been a proper independant study done on the merits/drawbacks of ethanol laced fuels.

I don't trust the gas companies and I don't trust word of mouth either.

I might have to get a horse.
