I helped somebody buy an Audi A5 last week. We cut a
pretty good deal until the check was handed over and
then everything went wrong.

After signing the contracts, the dealer said she could
have the car that day. So she put a down on her credit
card and we went home to get the cheque (paying by
cash/cheque). So we went back in the afternoon to
finalize the transaction. They put us in the room with
the finance guy to try and sell her extended warranty,
and I felt they all looked kind of nervous. The
salespitch lasted a long time and I had to go home. So
left my Sister in law at the dealer to finish transfer
to the insurance and hand over the 50K cheque. Well, at
7:00, SIL called to say she was still at the dealership.
While the car was waiting to be detailed, it got
vandalized. The seats and tires got slashed.

We're rather burned because the dealership didn't say
anything until after they took the money. It probably
wouldn't have been any issue to delay the delivery. But
they took the money and SIL had to put a stop payment on
the cheque.

Lots of business process problems at this new(ish)
dealership. The dealership already has SIL's old car,
and downpayment and the insurance was already
transferred. They also did not have a courtesy car
available for her so the sales manager loaned her his
car (SUV).

Wow... I'm really thinking names need to be named here.

I'd be taking 100% of my money, and walking out the door.
Threatening to sue as I left!

I went and looked at a car a few years back (dealer). They asked for
my drivers license, and took it to get 'copied'. They then pretty
much held it hostage while we negotiated a deal. After I decided I
really didn't want anything to do with the deal, they virtually refused
to give it back until we did the deal!

I started to get REALLY loud, and threatening to call the cops and
reporting them for theft and taking me virtually hostage.

You know, if they had just said they couldn't deliver the
car until next week, I'm sure nobody would have been worse
for wear on the deal. But they took the money and
transferred the insurance over, then said there was a
problem.
