So I was sitting in the drive through at McDonald's ordering a large order and all of a sudden my car jerks forward. What the &*ck I look back and there is this monster SUV.  The good news is I had my trailer on the back of the car.  He is all apologetic, saying sorry he was on the phone and did not see my trailer.  I  do a quick walk around the back of the trailer and the only damage is the plywood deck portion that extends beyond the steel frame is cracked.   I was parked with the lights on, trailer lights were on.  It did more damage to his big new SUV, it put a good scuff in the plastic bumper cover on his truck.    I think about it for a min and I am in a bit of a hurry, getting food for 7 people 2 cats and a dog.  I just tell him, look my trailer is pretty much fine, your truck has more damage than mine.  I'll just let it go.  He thanks me for not freaking and I leave.

The funny thing is this is twice now in less than a year my trailer has been hit.  I am tempted to put a big freaking flashing light on the rear of the trailer.  The first time it got hit I did not have the over sized deck and they actually hit the steel part of the trailer scuffing my paint.  It happened at the Canada / USA customs and the trailer was not yet in BC with BC Insurance, so dealing with USA insurance was going to be more of a headache than it was worth and I let that one go to.    I guess people see the bright yellow car and don't notice the trailer sticking 10ft out behind it.

Consider yourself lucky. My older brother has bought two new cars within 30 days. The first one, a Lexus IS250 with most options, was torched while he was asleep one night, for no apparent reason. ICBC wrote it off and returned him $50000-ish. He used that and bought a new Ford F-150 with every option, and driving it to my place, a guy jumped a yellow and plowed square into the back end, wrecking the tail gate, bumper, both read quarters, right axle and destroying the tail-lights. THAT'S bad luck with rear-ending.
Never shift into reverse without a back-up plan.

Make sure the area that your hitch mounts too isn't damaged at all.

That impact energy has to go somewhere!

I am going to go out and inspect it in the daylight.  However I think I am lucky on this one.   The impact was considerably less than even if I had to smack the brakes hard with the trailer loaded.   About the only thing I am even slightly worried about is the tung on the trailer and the spring mech that it has when it goes around the ball.

Hope you took down his information anyways.   I've seen situations like this where the other guy would go to ICBC and claim you backed into him.

Glad there's little damage to you or your car, but I would make sure everything is documented down anyways.
