Sorry I couldn't make it ya'll...

Figures - I went to cure a 'small' exhaust leak in my '86GT (header gasket was leaking making it sound like a diesel) and turned it into a huge leak when one of the exhaust bolts snapped off in the head.

Heading off tomorrow to once again search for an angle drill, and/or swing the engine to drill it out.  Bleah.

Yep, I always warn everyone, a simple manifold job has a 50/50 shot of turning into a major nightmare.   You really think trying to drill and tap that sucker is going to work?   I have never actually heard of anyone getting a clean drill and then tap while the head is still on the car.   I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya.

Well - don't know if it'll hold yet (had to stop for dinner), but I got it drilled out, and ran a tap down it a couple of turns (stopped as I felt the tap was going to break off in the hole - now THAT is a huge problem, trust me!!!).

Cranked a stud in there, so then the threads only have to get abused once.

Anyhow, we'll see tomorrow if it all holds together!

So John, did you have to tilt the cradle and/or use a right-angle drill to get at the broken exhaust bolt?

Right angle drill.

Almost had to swing the cradle as well, but managed without.

Well.....  whir whir....  vrooooom!  puuuuurrrrrrrrr.....

No more leak up top!  Still have a bit down around the j-pipe area, but that's a separate issue.
At least now it's quiet enough that I'll be able to locate & fix the other leak!

Congrats!

My GT's exhaust leak isn't too bad, but I should probably do the same repair to it someday.
