All,

On another newsgroup it was recently discussed as to what kind of
penetrating solution was the best. And according to an actual clinical test
that was conducted, a 50/50 mixture of acetone and ATF proved to be twice
as good as PB Blaster, or anything else for that matter.

Just thought you all would like to know.

That's quite interesting. I googled the info and came up with this...

April 2007 "Machinist's Workshop" magazine comparison test. They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrates with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment. Penetrating oil ...... Average load ..... Price per fluid ounce None .................... 516 pounds WD-40 .................. 238 pounds ...... $0.25 PB Blaster .............. 214 pounds ...... $0.35 Liquid Wrench ......... 127 pounds ...... $0.21 Kano Kroil ............... 106 pounds ...... $0.75 ATF-Acetone mix ....... 53 pounds ...... $0.10 (50/50 mix) The ATF-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Note the "home brew" was better than any commercial product in this one particular test. Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is about as good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price.

I'd always been told PB Blaster was the best commercially available stuff. Hmmm... I may have to change what I use.

       Now correct me if I am wrong isn't acetone the primary ingredient in ladies nail polish remover?   Which I know you can buy at the $1 store.   Hmm wonder if you need ford or Chevy ATF. LOL.  I may have to whip some of these up for this engine swap I am doing .

           I Also have that pressure tank with spray adapters.  (re chargeable aerosol spray can)

I googled http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acetone - acetone and discovered that it is indeed the "active" ingredient in nail polish remover, but that also leads me to suspect that there might be other crap in there you wouldn't want as part of your "home brew" penetrant.

Acetone is sold in the paint section of Can Tire, Home Depot, Rona, etc. Shouldn't be very expensive.

     My pressure can is metal.  So I should be fine.

Sounds like this stuff would make a great flame thrower.

      I don't know if the spray nozzles will handle it.   I do have a remove solvent tank sprayer that hooks to my compressor that is all steel. However its way to huge to use like a spray can.  Its meant for spraying an entire engine, not just one bolt on an engine.

So many times when I've used PB Blaster I've cursed the fact that when it's sprayed on so much is wasted. And it's not just because I'm a poor aim.

I've sometimes gone to the trouble of spraying it into a small bottle cap so that I can then pour it onto whatever nut or bolt I'm trying to loosen.

Not being able to spray a "home brew" penetrant isn't much of an issue for me at all.

Ooops, I guess I shouldn't have tried using it today to wipe the greasy dirt off my hands after working on the Fiero.

I bought some today ($6 at Rona for 1/2 liter) to mix up some "home brew" penetrant, and I actually did use it to wipe off my hands. It felt quite cool to the touch, but didn't really do that good of a job on my hands. Hopefully it didn't do a good job on my liver either. I won't be doing that again!
