JUNE 5th 2010 Saturday
6:15am-6:45am
We will meet at the Tim Horton's just East of the Corner
of HWY 10 and 152nd Street in Surrey at that time we will
all check our FRS's Radio's and set all radios to channel
20. If you have spare radio's please bring them as it
would be nice to see a radio in every car. MAKE SURE YOU
HAVE GOOD BATTERIES. Most people grab coffee and a pop
while we look over the cars. VOX IS NOT PERMITTED ON THE
DRIVE. If your radio has VOX capability Please do not use
it. VOX is the Voice Activated portion of some Radios. It
might be great in the forest, but in a car on the highway
with cabin noise, and wind and stereos they have a
tendency to activate the
radio and lock out anyone else from talking.
6:45am we will leave and head for the border Crossing at
176th street.. Make sure to have your Passport with your
driver's license with you.
7:30am After we all clear customs we will regroup just
across the border at a gas station for those that wish to
fill
up with the cheaper American fuel. Then I-5 bound.
8:30am We will make one stop at a rest area about 1/2
way down, sorry I don't remember the exact address. Just
keep your eyes and ears open. After re-grouping at the
rest area, next stop Arlington, Look out Jet City here we
come.
Once we arrive in Arlington
9:30am Arrive at Arlington
Take exit 206 and head east about 3-4 blocks to a Food
Mart there will be a grocery store where we can buy
picnic supplies. There will also be a car wash close at
hand.- Plan is for those that want to give their car a
quick scrub to do that first off. Then head for the
grocery store and get whatever they plan to bring. Buy
anything you want specialty grilled IE steaks and sauces.
We will then caravan to the ultra light air field for the
actual picnic.
The picnic starts at 10am
We will depart Arlington at 5pm, with cleanup starting
at 4pm.

Pfft, Gretchin's been craving a good dance for a while now. She may be cranky in the morning, but she'll lighten up once she gets to stretch her legs and wake up.
And I think I signed up... I don't know, sign up tab showed up, I put my name/description in, and then hit the button for the tab again... I think it worked. I hope it worked.
In any case, mark me down for our own club is what I meant Patty. So they know to double up on food.

I better get my passport in order so I can go. I'd also like to drive the '84 (much better gas mileage than the GT), so I need to get that paperwork in order as well.

I decided to apply for an http://www.icbc.com/driver-licensing/getting-licensed/edl - Enhanced BC Driver's License so that I could cross the border and attend this Fiero function for the first time.
Ten days later it arrived in the mail. Woohoo!
When I went to the Jet City Fieros website to register, I could see that Dave was the only WCF of BC club member listed.
As much as I like Dave, I'm hoping there's a few other club members who are seriously planning to attend.

Sorry, I'm not going to be able to attend Arlington
this year and probably not the Pontiac Performance
event either. My Fiero is still bundled up in its winter
storage blanket and won't come out until the weather
gets warmer ... then I have some work to do on it.
Maybe it will be ready for next year.

I registered for Arlington end of March along with other I noted on sign in sheet. However today I note something is wrong with registration site, as my name along with others isn't noted nor can I access sight to re-register again. I'M GOING AND LOOKING FORWARD TO THE DAY!!!!!!!

If it's any consolation, you are registered and do show up on the list.
But yes, there appears to be something "funky" with the webpage not presenting itself properly with certain browsers/screen resolutions. I can't access the site properly with XP/IE8, but XP/IE6 and Win98/IE6 are fine. I'll have to email Steve again so he can sort this out.

I discovered that if you're running IE8, you can view the http://www.arlington.westcoastfieros.com/ - Arlington sign-up page properly by clicking on Tools/Compatibility View.

Things change fast...
Steve made the same discovery as I did about Compatibility View being required to see his webpage properly on IE8. He therefore made some changes to the page and now it's fine. Compatibility View is no longer required.

I signed up. But if I don't get tires on this side of the border, I will pop by Discount Tire in Arlington/Marysville to buy new tires for my car before showing up at the airfield.
BTW...CDN Tire on Marine Drive has 1 215/60-14 tire they could sell me. The tire was discontinued 4 years ago. They said I could have it for $48. But I need 4 tires. It was a MotorMaster something.

Ken be careful with cross boarder tire shops. This maybe total rumor but I heard they were checking. If you do get new tires I would coat them in a layer or dust or something to make them look older before you come back.
Side note, now that I am back to driving the 88GT again full time there is no question that I will be attending in the 88GT and not riding in the Blazer. I am still trying to tempt Lisa to put a day permit on one of her Fiero's and drive it down. I can put all the baby stuff on the trailer that is too big to fit in a Fiero trunk.

I'd be pretty careful...
Way back in about 1976, I went across the border in my '67 Chevelle SS396 just for an hour or so. All I bought was gas. On the way back, I was accused of buying and installing new tires because the "nubbies" were still on them. I explained that I had just bought the car about a month beforehand and the tires were on the car when I bought it. I was telling the truth!
Anyway, they asked me a bunch of questions over and over, trying to trip me up. They finally let me through.

Not to worry about the tires. I do intend to declare them at the border and pay GST and the 6% duty. However, if I can find a good enough deal in the right size on this side of the border, I may not have to buy them stateside.

Wouldn't do any good... the tire shops are in "cahoots" with the border patrol. As soon as they see a Canadian plate getting work done they call up and let them know. If the border guys then get $$'s out of you, the tire shop gets a kick back for the "hint/rat out".
I may or may not have got that from someone in the law enforcement "industry".

My friend is a border officer and he says you just have to declare and most of the time, you just pay GST and PST. Sometimes they don't bother with charging duty. However, if you don't declare, a whole set of other rules kick in.
As it turns out, I have a scheduling conflict (kid has a piano recital) because the Pontiac show n shine is a week later than usual. I won't be able to make that. So Arlington will be my big event for June.

We have a club meeting on the 8th of May, so I would like to have a sign up sheet for Arlington at the meeting. Then I will forward all the names from that list to Steve to add to the site. In the past only about 25% of our members have taken the time to sign up on any of the sites that I or Steve have made. I want to see at least 20 Fiero's from BC this year. 30 would be better but that would be pushing it.

Should mention that a Passport is not required if you have an http://www.icbc.com/driver-licensing/getting-licensed/edl - Enhanced Driver's License .

As someone who has never been to the Arlington event before, I need to ask this question...
If the weather is as crappy next Saturday as it is/was today, does anyone still go? I honestly don't think I'd be interested.
Of course the event is still a week away (as of the date of this post), so I realize a lot can happen with the weather in the meantime (although the forecast is not looking good).

Perhaps I need to rephrase my question. I figured the event itself will still be occuring no matter what. How likely is it though that people will drive for hours to attend an event like this if it's a miserable day?
I guess I'm just curious what club members here in the Lower Mainland have done in past years for this event if/when the weather has unfortunately sucked.

This drive is rain or shine, and in many occasions we have
left here in rain and arrived in amazing sunshine. Don't
forget we are going to be 160kms south of here and the
weather can be drastically different. Also the fact that
weather can simply change rapidly. I always tell people to
bring an Umbrella either to keep the rain off your head, or
the sun out of your eyes.

I got the wife to agree to going to the event, (her ex was the prez of a Tacoma Mustang club) she had a bad vibe about it, But we will be visiting the daughter in Everett in the same trip. Will be looking forward to matching faces with names.

Attempt at Re-Edit of the schedule, I'll try to fix the

This is all the time info I have, and its a rough
schedule at best. Hopefully you can judge our aprx time
from it. We will be on GMRS CH# 20 so if you have a
radio find a place near the hwy and keep it tuned in and
listen for our radio chatter.

I don't think my better half understood that to get ready for a pic-nic required getting up in the A.M. We are at least 45 minutes from I-5 whether olympia or tacoma. I would have to depart home well before she is willing. As of right now I will drive up to mount vernon on the fourth and wait for the Parade. will have a walkie talkie on 20, if we miss connections, will see you at the shindig.

LOL, Lisa and I will have to be on the road to the meet by
6am. Which means in order to get the up, get the baby
loaded, both cars ready to go, we are going to have to be
up by 4:30am for a picnic. We have members in the
outskirts that are going to have to be up by 3:30am to make
the meet time.

Just found this cool site.... (BC Gov't one at that!)

This shows the Pac Hwy crossing, southbound, for last Saturday. If you check the volume@times by clicking on the 'show data table', you can see the HUGE spike (the numbers low, but it's a 50% jump!) at like 7:05. And then it just gets worse (about 800% from low to high) until about 3PM when it starts to level off.
So since (in theory) we're all shoving off at 6:30, we SHOULD beat the major pack. But I think we'll have to hard-nose the time this year, even if someone's "almost there". With my f'd up ankle, I'm hesitant to even make the trek - and I really can't get stuck in on again off again traffic! And with my tranny having 'issues' I decided against inflicting it on someone else.

I think it is his car that will be reluctant, LOL. I was
on my way home with my new 4 banger on the trailer in
tow, fighting New West traffic at 5pm, and I get a semi panicked call from T, he was broke down in Surrey, broke
his 4spd slave bracket. He had no tools, no part and to
make matters more complicated had his kid brother with
him. So I make a quick U-Turn on the truck route and
head over the Pattelo bridge. I get T to call Dr.Fiero
and the Dr, finds a 4 spd slave bracket, then sorts out
the tools that we should need and gets a care package
ready for me, I race over to the Dr's pick it all up and
head to where T is broke down. I remembered the last
time T had posted about trying to change out the slave
and the nightmare he had with it, so I decided I would go
ahead and change the bracket for him. I get to him, find
the bracket was snapped into 2 pieces. It wasn't until I
started the job that I realized/remembered that his slave
bracket had an odd size bolt in it. Factory is suppose
to be a 13mm and a 15mm his had a 15mm and a 17mm. He
had to run over to a local repair shop, give them his
wallet and they loaned us the 17mm socket we needed.
Took me all of 20mins to change it, and probably 10mins
for Tristen to wander up and down the road trying to find
the pushrod for the slave that blew out of the car while
he was driving. I got it all swapped out, and amazingly
enough, there was almost zero air introduced into the
system so I did not even have to bleed it out. Once we
verified it was all working, Roy and I jumped back into
my car and headed home.
A huge thank you to the good Dr, for having the
parts and tools available for me to go and rescue T.
I can't remember off the top of my head who I gave a 4spd
slave bracket to, however it was in my scrap pile and I practically forced them to take it as I knew eventually
every 4 spd car will break the OEM bracket. Its not a
matter of IF its a matter of WHEN. If you have an OEM
bracket and have a few bucks to blow, head straight to
Rodney Dickmans site and buy his steel replacement. Then
keep it in your car with the appropriate tools to change
it when the time comes. Especially if you are going on a
long drive. Or even better, but it install it and hang
your OEM one on your garage wall, so when someone else
gets stranded, you have a spare to help someone out with.

Perhaps we need to clarify the bit about "FRS" radios. Any radio that makes use of channel 20 is a GMRS radio.
I borrowed my girlfriend's two FRS radios for this trip only to discover that FRS radios don't go above channel 14. (I know a lot more about these radios now than I did a few days ago!)
Yes, I realize that GMRS radios are preferred as they have a much better range, but for those of us who presently only have FRS radios, will they be worthwhile at all to take on the road trip to Arlington?
On the same topic, are there going to be any extra GMRS radios brought along to distribute among those of us who are GMRS challenged?

If you are truly GMRS challenged, that means that you're also $20-30+ challenged, since that's all they're worth now!

But really - toss the useless FRS into the same box with your Betamax and Motorola M8000 (all perfectly good in the day!) and go fetch a new unit.
You can bring your 14 channel unit - but nobody is going to hear you up on 20.

supply some batteries for it, they are 4 AAA batteries.

One or more cars could be equipped with both types of radios so urgent information from GMRS equipped cars could be forwarded to FRS equipped cars and vice versa.

The first year with GMRS we only had 2 radio's so one
went in the lead car, (me) and one went with the tail
car, and they also had FRS radio's to report to everyone
else. The 2nd year we were about 50/50 so again we had
both radio's and some people had to have both in their
cars so they could re-port back to the FRS guys about
what was going on, the 3rd year, we went totally GMRS.
If some people choose to use FRS thats totally fine, but
I can't guarantee there will be someone else running both
radio's and have the ability to listen on the GMRS then
grab the FRS and hope to reach everyone on the FRS band.
The reason we chose to make the move was simply longer
range and much greater clarity. My GMRS radios are good
for 30km line of sight or about 5kms with serious
obstructions to signal. The FRS radio's we were finding
had trouble at 1km range on the highway unless you had
perfect batteries and the radios were the same brand.
Tiny variations to chips or something made some radio's
have a hard time hearing other Radio's. With the GMRS that
issue is pretty much gone.
However this topic is moot, as Patrick I have a spare
GMRS radio you can use, I have spoken to a few people
that said they will also have spare radio's to loan out
to anyone that does not have a GMRS equipped radio. I
am charging the batteries in my radio's now, however I
would not rely on them as they seem to go dead after only
a few hours of use. XS Cargo has 20 packs of AAA batteries on for 9.99 which is one hell of a deal. They
also have 48 packs of AA's which are great for you
digital camera guys. I can speak from experience their
house brand batteries are fairly good.
Now I need to get back to work packing and checking, and re-checking. Its truly unbelievable the amount of stuff
that I have to pack for these events. I must have 8
folding chairs, 2 tables, the new Club Pop Up Tent, extra
radio's 2 coolers filled with picnic supplies, camera's
batteries, stroller for Arianna.....
P.S. Lisa is bringing her Fiero with Arianna ridding
shotgun with her. So lots of things on her car have to
be checked after such a long time sitting without being
driven. (Nearly a year parked)
Ok enough chatter, I got to run.

Okay, thanks Dave.
Now that we've covered the FRS/GMRS differences, hopefully next year people like myself won't be caught off guard (I can't be the only one!) when it comes to having a "FRS" radio available to use. It's now been clarified that it's actually a GMRS radio which is required, and we've all got a whole year to get suitably equipped for Arlington 2011.

Thought I would change my oil and oil filter today and grease the GT for the trip. Good thing I did as I discovered a big effen screw in one of the front tires.
I unscrewed the screw and there was a sizeable hole right through to the inside. I've plugged it. Hopefully the tire is still holding air tomorrow morning.

Please people pack spare (even old) serp belts in your cars, I always have a spare in my car just in case and the last arlington that I made it to in my car I blew a serp on the way there, thankfully i had a couple of old ones with me to make it to arlington.

OK... bizarre....
Running around town in the period leading up to today, spreadsheet says: 17.14mpg (yeah - there's something wrong!!!!) Trip down: 19.32mpg Trip back: 28.61mpg!!!!
I'm really hoping I can finally narrow this down to a very intermittent TPS (all the times I scanned it, it was fine - EXCEPT for in the parking lot this morning!).

As far as mileage, I used 1/2 tank the entire trip, filled up at Chevron on the way down and filled up at the same chevron on the way back up. Used a total of 4.9 US Gallons which boils down to 30.6mpg WooHoo. It almost does not seem possible, but Patrick was there with me when I filled up and I had to restart the pump several times just to get that 4.9 gallons. So even with my rather spirited driving, I still got decent gas mileage.
I'll be posting pics and videos later tonight.

And Patrick's GT used a total of 6.9 US Gallons while driving exactly the same distance. And I wasn't pulling a trailer or doing 195 KPH either.
My engine seems to run just fine. Maybe it's the automatic tranny that totally sucks up the gas?

And Patrick's GT used a total of 6.9 US Gallons while driving exactly the same distance. And I wasn't pulling a trailer or doing 195 KPH either.
My engine seems to run just fine. Maybe it's the automatic tranny that totally sucks up the gas?
