Probably a leaking heater core.  Keep an eye on your water level in the cooling system.

If the car is A/C it is very easy to change, if the car does not have AC it is a bit more work, but still very easy.  In either case, a mechanic will take less than an hour to do it.

If you had just replaced your heater core, it is possible some coolant got spilled into the venting.   Hence when you turn on the heat, the smell of the coolant gets blown into the cabin.

On the other hand, the heater core swivels to open and shut the vent (heat exchange) and the coolant in the core is connected to the cooling system via rubber hoses.  It is possible those hoses need replacing also.

Good luck with it....

When I first got my GT it smelled of antifreeze. I changed the heater core only to find out that the core had already been changed. For the next 2 years I could smell antifreeze when the heater was on. I assume that antifreeze had gone into the vents and the residue is what I was smelling.

Unless you took the heater apart and cleaned it when the heater core was replaced this could be the problem.

Another thought - this person never actually said 'smells antifreeze'!

Are you smelling that, or mold, or a dead herring, or......   ????

Hit up your local auto parts place.

There's stuff you can get in a spray can that is for cleaning out mold in air conditioning systems.  You spray it down your air intake (usually with all the doors and windows closed, A/C on high - NOBODY in the car!!!!).

The air intake is got to by popping the front hood - look right around the passenger side windshield wiper - see the vent/grill?  Just put your hand there with the fan on high and you'll feel it sucking in.

John do you think that will help with the musty, stale air smell usually associated with A/C systems.

Yes - that's what the stuff is intended for.

Kills the mold spores that cause the smell.
