During the last couple of weeks or so, I'd been having trouble with shifting into gears. Sometimes the shifter would be difficult to move. Yesterday, when I was about to leave home for work, the shifter just simply refused to go into any gear.

Anyhow, turned out the car was simply out of the fluid in the master clutch cylinder. Now it is shifting fine (and actually feels even better than before!).

My question is would I have damaged anything if I was trying to force it to shift (when the fliud was completely out)? I mean I was REALLY going hard at it and it wouldn't budge. Any thoughts? Thanks guys!

I'm sure you injected air into the line when you ran the master down. You will need to power bleed that puppy.

As for the damage. We had a bad pressure plate in our car for many months when we first bought it. Had to push quite hard for every gear. Now that it is all fixed, there doesn't seem to be any lasting effects of our abuse.

I wouldn't worry about it if it's shifting well now.

So if it is working perfectly fine right now, do I need to bleed it?

If the fluid went down at all - you have a leak. Stuff doesn't evaporate. ;)

Chance are the slave is leaking, and it'll just happen again.
If you pull back the rubber boot at the slave - look for moisture.
I have replacements here.

As stated you probably have a leak someplace, most likely the slave.

You also now have air in the system and it will need to be bleed out.

As to damage, yes you were hurting the syncho's, they are what stop you from shifting in the engine is running and car is not in motion. They are small clutches that bring the 2 gears into speed / synch so when you shift it does not grind a gear. Forcing a gear shift will wear them out much quicker. However if the car is driving fine now, then you did not do enough damage to notice it and that is a good thing.

Take good care of a Fiero clutch/trans and it will last for a very long time. Ignore a problem and drive it until it totally breaks and you are in for a HUGE repair bill up wards of $2000.

I don't mean to scare you, but these cars are 20 years old and need routine maintenance. Take care of it and it will give you thousands of happy fun filled miles of driving. Don't take care of it and it will empty your bank account in short order.
