So, with the good vibes from the last autocross still resonating in our minds and bodies, is anyone else interested in this upcoming autocross put on by the Corvette club?
I notice in the thread that Brian has linked to that it's stated the number entrants will be limited to 50. That's great. I wonder if this is something the Porsche club may wish to look into doing with their future events.
At last Sunday's autocross there were at least 70 entrants. (Last month there were 40.) Keeping in mind that the event is scheduled to wrap up at 4:30 pm whether there are 30 entrants or 100, the number of entrants signed up makes quite a difference with how many runs through the course each driver gets to enjoy.
Obviously as a newb driver, I want to go through the course as many times as possible at each event. Five times last Sunday just wasn't enough!

I have a spot confirmed, and PCA will be looking at options as this was crazy yesterday. I am in the VCMC this Sunday, and UBC the one later, so if anyone is interested to visit you are welcome, this is more competitive of course, not as social and fun as PCA but always fun
If anyone does want to go, email and reserve a spot...

Brian, just to clarify, are you saying the autocross put on by the Corvette club is more "competitive" than the one we were just at put on by the Porsche club?
If so, would I (as a newb driving a 4-banger Fiero) not really be encouraged by this group to participate?
|

Date Posted: 07 September 2010 at 1:06pm
No, the VCMC this Sunday is very competitive, even though it's the Novice series, all the "usual suspects" that we have problems with are there...the UBC is competitive but real easy going group.
The BC Corvette club I have not been too, but speaking with Gary yesterday he says they are just like PCA but don't take chit like poor Rich did...I'll be the pitt bull:)

Maybe Brian can post the specifics on helmets. Do they really check or how strict are they on the specific helmet that you have. I know for Mission 1/4 mile racing, basically any helmet legal for a motorcycle is fine for racing, and that is much higher speed than an autocross.
When I went to the drivers edge site, the 1st helmet I looked at was $695 and I about fainted at the keyboard. I am sure they have some more reasonable priced helmets, but what are the requirements?

I found some helmets being sold locally for as low as $159 http://www.pdm-racing.com/bell/helmets.html - Here .
I know NOTHING about helmets. Before any of us newbs rush out and buy one, hopefully one of the experienced autocross guys will chime in here and advise us.
I might mention that the Porsche club has free "loaner" helmets (four of them I believe) available for use at their events, but to be totally honest, the greatest cause of stress for me on Sunday was locating a loaner helmet prior to my runs. Other guys would grab them way too early (long before they actually needed them), or they would "forget" to put them back after their runs. There were a couple times where I was just three cars away from my run (and each run is about a minute) and I was still searching for a helmet. That was no fun.

The only thing I can think to add about the helmets is that you should make sure test fit it before you buy.
I've never seen anyone check the helmets so even if there are rules for them they may not be enforced.

I found it: http://www.scca.com/documents/Solo_Rules/2010_scca_solo_rules.pdf - The 2010 SCCA Solo Rulebook (Look in section 4.3.1)
4.3.1 Helmets
Helmets meeting the following standards must be worn while on course:
All helmets meeting the current or two immediately preceding Snell Foundation standards (SA2005, SA2000, SA95, M2010, M2005, M2000, M95, K2005, K98), SFI standards 31.1, 41.1, 31.1A, 31.2A, 41.1A, 41.2A or British spec BS6658-85 type A/FR are acceptable.
Formula Junior drivers must use helmets meeting the above, SFI 24.1 (Youth Helmets), Snell CMR2007 (Children’s Motorsports Restricted), or Snell CMS2007 (Children’s Motorsports Standard) specifications.
For maximum protection, helmets must fit securely and should provide adequate peripheral vision. The chin strap must be securely fastened. Loaner helmets should be available to vehicle occupants not having their own.

Thanks Colby. This may or may not be a dumb question, but are these necessarily the rules that the local clubs use and (supposedly) enforce? In other words, are the local autocross/car clubs required to follow these rules?

I don't know about required... Brian would be able to answer this question a bit better. I do know PCA doesn't follow them so much, they're much more casual about it all. I think UBC and VCMC follow them more closely, I know they at least do the classing of the cars.

Minimal is a M class helmet (motorcycle) for auto cross, PCA is unique, but all the other clubs enforce. The choice is whether you will do a track day, if so you need then the SA2000 or SA2005 helmet which you can buy locally at Drivers Edge or PDM

The BC Corvette Club would like to invite the Porsche Club members to our Autocross event on Saturday, Sept 25 at the BC Driving Centre in Pitt Meadows. Please pre register with Vic Nightscales via email at mailto:vnightscales@netscape.net - vnightscales@netscape.net or phone 778-593-1180. We have just purchased new timing equipment to ensure a smooth event, and will be able to provide lots of runs. We will restrict the total number of entrants to 50 and the price payable on Saturday morning will be $40 per driver. Vic

If Colby wasn't going to participate in this particular autocross, I was going to drive my GT so that I'd have the extra ponies to shut you down.
However, Colby is coming out (which is what I was hoping he'd decide), so together we're going to do our best to demonstrate what the mighty duke can do against those nasty Vettes. Obviously we're hoping for a tight course!

Brian, for those coming out for the first time who might be concerned about having to buy or borrow a helmet, do you know offhand whether the Corvette club will have free loaner helmets available at their autocross event the same as the Porsche club did?
I'd just hate to see anyone not come out and try this for the first time simply because they're worried about the helmet requirement issue.
And in regards to the "danger" of autocrossing (for anyone who's never been to a track and is wondering)...
If the truth be known, there's actually far less chance of needing a helmet while driving on an autocross track than there is on a public road! I'm not kidding.
Seriously, I sometimes wonder what the actual point is of requiring a helmet while autocrossing? The worse that can happen out there is that you're going to slide and knock over a small plastic pylon!

Let's discuss this tomorrow about who needs assistance and helmets.
I really don't know if the Corvette guys have loaners, I doubt it...Kerstin actually will be out now knowing the Fiero force, but also to support John, she was so happy to know he was coming out...she has a soft spot for you I think:).
I will email Gary and ask so we know...otherwise we can split up our group and share...we also have time and again, call arond the bike shops, this is the time of year where they may have some sales.
The helmets are required because it's competition timed sessions, if this was training it would be different...there are still obsticles like the fence and other peeps:)...lol, and we all have to follow the SCAA rules.

Heh heh, out of curiosity I asked Vic as well when I got my response from him. He's going to peg us as a bunch of "keeners".
[EDIT] Just found out from Vic that the Corvette club does not have loaner helmets. We'll all have to plan accordingly.

Well, I've been talking to a couple guys with cheap helmets (See: Craigslist). There's one I really want for myself, but if someone wants, there's one for $20 and one for $40 which I can pick-up for anyone who wants (Although I wouldn't argue with a toonie or so for gas, as neither is in New West). They're ALL full face. The $40 is a nifty red/white/black tribal look, and the $20 is straight black with a tinted and non-tinted visor.
Let me know if want one of the others.

On the back or inside you should have M2010, M2005, M2000, or M95, if so you are good.

Sorry for being so slow on the draw with this, but I take it then that DOT motorcycle helmets (with no "M" rating) are therefore not acceptable for autocross?

Like tomorrow with UBC, rain or shine...I did not go to VCMC where I already paid $35 registration and $50 membership...expensive day to sit at home.
For tomorrow, if I wake up and as it's saying 20mm of rain...if it's like this morning, I will enjoy some frersh java and stay home, and I paid $40 for this one.
For next week the concern I have is that we have not paid as they have an honor system...which means not too many will show, so LOTS more runs for us, or it gets so bad the afternoon is called off early, but this is by vote of all drivers. So I would like to commit to this one for all of us, bring my canopy for the pitt where we can have shelter, if someone else has one great. Then bring some shairs and bundle up.

Well Brian if they don't cancel it and you do you, I'll be write there along side you. I emailed Vic early this week and confirmed a spot. I'll be in the Yellow 88. I guess look on the bright side, it will be a nice easy way to work into Autocross as many people are much more comfortable doing low speed slides in the rain than high speed slides in the dry. The canopy we have here (The club canopy) is mean to block sun and not rain, so it is not water proof but will allow a bit of protection.

Hmmm... the tires on my GT have been siped. I wonder if I should swap wheels/tires and put those on my '84 autocross machine if it looks like wet weather next Saturday?
I'd obviously prefer it to be dry out at the track, but if it's not, be prepared for Colby and I to surprise a few people with our mighty dukes.

Ok all,
We have registered to go: Patrick, Tristan, Johnny Boy, David, Colby and myslef from our club...and Allan, Gary and I think Colby's brother.
Weather will hold...I will bring my canopy, David said he will bring his...suggestion is to get your cars ready Friday night, EMPTY it out and only take what you need. Suggestion also is a cooler and pack beverages & food for the budget wise
Meeting at MacDonalds on Lougheed & Harris Road at 7:30am, leave by 7:45am and drive together, park together...need to get there earlier than normal so we can attempt to find a good spot for the canopies.
How's all that for everyone...ask if you have any questions...Cheers

"Spanked" he says! The times are posted http://members.shaw.ca/rsandor4/Sept%205th%202010%20autox.htm - Here .
Tristan, your best time beat my best time by 1.466 seconds on that course which took about a minute to run. And let's be honest, that layout favored higher horsepower/faster cars.
I'd hardly say you "spanked" my duke (or Colby's) with your V6.
We'll see how the dukes do this weekend, especially now that Colby has helped get the wheels on my duke powered '84 all pointed in the same direction and leaning the correct way.

Well Brian I am still trying to decide run my street tires that are almost to the wear bars, or swap on my winter tires that are almost new and have a ton more grip in the rain. However they are also only a 195/70/14 so if the weather does turn dry they are going to suck as they roll on the rims and don't have the extra width of the 215's. Plus a narrower offset. I will be there with the 88GT, I will have to borrow a helmet from someone for the runs though.
Patrick and or Brian, if you really want to push this event, I would seriously recommend posting to the mailing list with as many details as you can pick out of this thread.
P.S. Brian, this being a different group, is the no smoking ban still going to be a problem. If I don't get to have a cigarette at least once an hour, I tend to get really bitchy. I am sure you can remember from the days you smoked.
