Brian, it's possible everyone else had the same impression as I did when they looked at your link. As in... What are all these acronyms/abbreviations and what the heck are they talking about?

-------------------------------------------------------

NCT 5 and VCMC Series 3; Novices, Here's Your Chance to Beat the President!

VCMC in partnership with our sponsors is proud to present the last event of the 2010 NCT and VCMC Series!

Wrapping up the NCT and VCMC series, It's time for the Novices to lay it all out, and see if they have what it takes to beat the President! Coming off a class-win at the NWAA Smackdown, the Prez is getting a little big for his britches! Let's see if any of the Novices can humble our fearless leader, and beat him on PAX. The top five Novices to beat the President will receive trophies from our great partner Blitzgear, to be awarded at the year-end banquet!

Without further ado, on to the regs:

1. The Series will run under CACC groupings.

Groups for the series will be as follows:
Open PAX = This is the Topgun class, if you think you are fast, this is where you should be.
Stock = AS, BS, CS, DS, ES, FS, GS, HS, SS.
Non Stock 1 = All Street Prepared.
Non Stock 2 = All SM, Prepared, Mod.
Non Stock 3 = All Street Touring Classes.
Ladies
T Class = Open Class (except Street Touring Classes), anyone without R-compound tires can join (See SCCA tire exclusion list).

And of course our existing Novice Class will be running and accumulating points as well.

2. Maximum of 2 drivers per car per heat.

3. Only the first three runs will count for Open PAX competitors.

* NEW FOR 2010 *

4. Note that Open PAX competitors shall not conduct/participate in ride-alongs until they have completed their first three runs (the ones that count for points).

-------------------------------------------------------

Besides, I'm not satisfied to just be watching anymore, I want to be driving!

lol...again, many of them race at the Nationals, etc., so much more competitive.  This event as with UBC have these "fun" events where you race the Stig or President of the clubs...and $40 at the gate, so come on out and play

I have to put my R888's back on...think I'll make it out for UBC also, week by week for now.

What about the membership fee?

--------------------------------------------

Membership is required for this event (and includes CACC membership). Don't forget that signing up now gives you next year's membership as well!

$50 for new members (free event included!)
$50 for current members and renewals

--------------------------------------------

Brian, what does it mean for new members... "free event included"

It means for people who have never joined VCMC before, when you pay $50 for a one year membership, the next autox is free.  Returning members must pay $50/yr to do club events and they do not get a free autox.

Just above on that page is:

Registration is available the morning of the event, but we encourage pre-registration on Karelo to minimize delays, and save you money!
Entry fee
Karelo - $30
On-site - $40

Since they are offering online registration with the above on-site $40, then you can consider if you want to become a member where when you first join, you get the first event included...

Luke, meet for breaky at MacD's?...I'll be there at 7am, and onsite by 7:45am.  The tech is much more serious, they check the battery, bearings, fluid, etc...

Allan, just to make this clear for myself and others... If any of us paid to become a member, say tomorrow, would that mean that Sunday's event would qualify as the "next" autocross and therefore would be "free"?

Yes.  Pay the $50 and you are a member until Dec 31, 2011 (just over a year) and no extra fees to pay to play on Sunday.

Brian: One guess.  ;)

Actually I bought both my memberships (renewed) with VCMC & UBC in the last month and they are good until Sept 2011 apparently...I want a card with an expire date

Pat...pay the day rate and experience VCMC first hand then choose, save the money

Oooo, that sounds good.

A couple other questions though, for either Allan or Brian (or both)...

This event sounds more, ummm.... serious. Is this really an event for third time driver in a duke powered Fiero?

One other thing to keep in mind for us newbs - What is the limit for driving autocrosses in order to still qualfy as a Novice for the Slush Series? I saw it listed somewhere but now I can't find it. Seems to me it was only either two or three times.

Originally posted by Bassman Bassman wrote:

Brian, you posted while I was typing. I understand what you mean, but it does say... "Membership is required for this event" at the site.

Brian, are you sure you can do that? Their forum thread says:
Quote Membership is required for this event (and includes CACC membership). Don't forget that signing up now gives you next year's membership as well!

On the UBCSCC site, they say this about novices ( http://www.ubcscc.com/events/2010/slush1/suppregs.html - here ):
Quote A "Novice Driver" is defined as a person who has competed in three or fewer scored AutoSlalom events before January 1st of the current calendar year.
Novice drivers are not allowed to take passengers, except in the case of a senior driver for instructional purposes.

Although I don't know if the PCA/BCCC autoxes are considered "scored AutoSlalom events".

Also, the CACC membership confuses me. I can't tell if it's required or not.

So Colby, if I understand those rules, someone who's done a hundred autocrosses since January 1st of this year (and up to three events previously) could still qualify as a Novice. Correct?

That's what it looks like. I'm guessing the idea is that you're considered a novice for your first season.

These guys play hardball. I noticed in the rules...

"On-board cameras are not allowed unless securely mounted onto the car (suction cup or bracket mounts at the discretion of the Head of Technical Inspection). Specifically, passengers may NOT handhold any cameras. Anyone in violation of this rule will have his/her camera immediately confiscated and may face additional penalties at the discretion of the Event Chair as this is a serious safety concern as outlined in the CACC GCR."

My buddy Jim was handholding my DV camcorder a couple times while as a passenger in both Brian's and my car at the Corvette Club's autocross. I guess that was a no-no.

Interestingly enough, it doesn't specifically state the driver can't handhold a camera.

And this is a scary one...

Equipment / Facility Collision Damage Reminder
A flat fee of $150 is to be paid immediately upon contact with any equipment (except cones) or any part of the facility. This includes hitting timing crates, running over cables, etc. Details http://www.vcmc.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=9122 - here .

Novice definitions will be different for each club so best to check with them.  Just say you're a novice and don't worry about it.

vcmc $150 damage fee.  Yep, run over cables or bump the timing light and pay the $150.

Cameras can't be held by hand because they could slip and go someplace bad.

Rulez is rulez with them.  Fun is optional.  lol!

While some people in those clubs are harda$$es, some of them are really great folks.  You'll quickly find out who is who.    ...and some of them are real serious when it comes to classing your car properly.

Brian will be able to help guide you out there.

And also, is the CACC license a requirement for participating in the VCMC or UBCSCC events? Should I quickly fill out http://www.caccautosport.org/pdf/2010AutoSlalomLicenseApp.pdf - this form and hope that whatever needs to be done is done in time if I want to do the event on the 24th?

Colby, it seems to me from what I can decipher that a $50 membership with the VCMC Motorsport Club covers/"includes" the $10 membership with CACC.

-------------------------------------------------------

Membership is required for this event (and includes CACC membership). Don't forget that signing up now gives you next year's membership as well!

$50 for new members (free event included!)

Yeah, but I'm undecided as to whether or not I want to go to this VCMC event, so I still need to know how UBCSCC handles this if I decide not to go.

Dancing is fun!

Since this is the last event of the year for vcmc, I expect that this course will be more challenging than the ones you have driven in the past.  Challenging is good though - keeps you on your toes.

I think you guys should go.  $50 is only $10 more than you're used to and the weather should be good this weekend.  Sunny but cool.  If you don't like the environment at VCMC, then no big deal.  Don't go to future events.  If you like the challenge and being around some amazing drivers, then go to more next year since you'll now be a member of VCMC for 2011.

CACC annual license fee: I think VCMC is rolling that $10 into their $50 annual fee.  I don't know if UBCSCC is.  UBCSCC might hit you up for $10 extra.  This has to do with the way they changed the funding model for CACC (the governing organization for many car clubs in the province).  In the past you had to buy a CACC autox license to compete in the regional autox series (top competitive events).  You'd collect points for each event and the winner of each class would win a trophy and/or a jacket, etc.  Since these clubs and CACC is volunteer based, they need to raise their own funding to make this work.  This year saw a change where an autox license wasn't necessary to compete in the regional events, so they lowered the amount you had to pay and made everyone pay it.  $10 from everyone compared to $40 or whatever from just the serious competitors.  I think it's something like that.

Don't bother with this form.  It won't get completed in time.  I think UBCSCC has a day fee of $5 or something like that if you want to try them out.  They won't turn away new people because of that form not being done ahead of time.

Hey Colby, we could seriously kick Tristan's butt on that course!

I'm still undecided at this point whether to participate this Sunday. The biggest issue is whether or not I get my helmet on Saturday. It's been delivered to my friend's place in Blaine (as I bought it new on eBay in the States), but I'm not sure when he'll be bringing up my way. I don't want to have to be borrowing a helmet again or chasing after the "loaner" helmets available at the autocross.

I still have a few more hours to fret about this.

Looks like sunscreen...lol, pack a lunch as this group usually does not plan a lunch break.  I have a large bag to empty and store anything into as you want to have your car empty which you know.  I remove and leave at home anything I won't need like floor mat for drivers side.

See you in the morning...change of clothing, going to cold in the morning, frost out today:)

No, and I had already decided to forgo the event tomorrow because my helmet is still sitting down in Blaine. However, Colby contacted me and said he wanted to participate tomorrow... and bribed me with the use of his dad's helmet for the day. (Thanks Gary!)

So Brian, why is everybody meeting a half-hour earlier at McD's than for the other autocross events? Is the schedule different?

[EDIT] I've now noticed the following. I guess I'll see you all at McD's at 7 am!

Gates open @ 7:30 am.Tech closes @ 8:15am,

The times are different...it's been some time, but in the past you pull into a lane for tech and get checked, then find a pitt...then time to walk this course, they are always tighter.

I think it's good for everyone to see how vcmc runs things.  Very military like at times:

Sometimes it's good....sometimes...well....

vcmc has the highest number of excellent drivers.  If you really want to learn how to do this stuff, I recommend vcmc events.  Be sure to ask the organizers for a senior driver to help you out.  Take advantage of this opportunity to get some great advice.

Have fun!

The best part is knowing when you've driven a particular section well. It just feels right.

That was a fun ride!

Brian, what was that weird noise in the background that sort of sounds like someone talking? It wasn't me!

In Colby's video, the "talking" we hear is the race commentator being broadcast over the car's radio (which was kind of a neat feature at this autocross), but the background noise I'm referring to in your video sounds different. It sounds quite distorted. I suppose it must be the track commentator coming over the radio as well, but I don't recall it sounding that weird when I was in your car. Of course, most of the time I was hanging on for dear life and not noticing much else!

I think he had his radio turned on.

Edit: OK, looks like you edited your post... I think the range of the broadcast was pretty limited, so I bet that's what it is.

Excellent, Colby!  That's a big step.

When I'm driving, I want to get on the gas early when coming out of a turn (most of the time).  When you are full throttle zipping past the apex and hoping your car has enough grip to complete the turn and get you to the next section, then you've done it right.  This is something that you can easily feel.

Screwing up a section by having to brake really hard and make a big steering correction also stands out like a sore thumb.  I've done that many times....

I'm glad Rich and JJ were there to help you Dukes.  Next time you see them at an autox, don't be afraid to ask them for help again.  They are great guys who happen to be great drivers and will be happy to give you a hand.  Myself or Brian can introduce you to more great folks in the future to be sure you get some top quality help.

After three kicks at the can, I have to admit to certain frustrations while being on the autocross track.

1) I enjoy the sensation of acceleration. However, I'm frustrated as heck when driving the duke that nothing much happens when I step on the gas. Yes, the car goes somewhat faster eventually, but I want to feel the car I’m driving jump immediately.

2) It seems to me in the corners on the track that the tires which are mounted on my '84 have all the gripping force of melted margarine. Yes, I'm sure I'm contributing somewhat with my less than perfect approaches etc, but with any speed whatsoever my tires were squealing like banshees sliding sideways yesterday. At the next autocross that both Brian and I are at, I’m going to swap tires with him when he’s not looking.

Seriously though, what a difference when riding in Brian’s GT. Yes, I fully appreciate the superior driving skills that Brian has developed through repeated practice on the track, but I’m also aware of the huge differences between his GT and my ‘84.

I’m not suggesting that Brian should or would be interested in this, but on a "what if?" basis, it would be very educational to see how we’d both make out if we swapped cars for one run. Would Brian’s superior driving skills actually get the duke around the track a whole lot faster, and conversely, would my newb skills on the track slow Brian’s GT times down approaching the duke’s level? Again, I’m not suggesting we actually try doing this, but the wheels are turning in my head regarding possible theoretical outcomes.

Now before anyone accuses me of being way too impatient and expecting way too much in way too short a period of time (considering my first autocross was less than a month and a half ago!), let me state quite emphatically that I’ve really enjoyed the three events I’ve participated in up to this point. I have every intention of continuing, and I have every intention on improving upon my newb autocross driving skills.

I guess I’m just debating the merits of continuing to drive the ‘84 duke when I suspect I’d be much happier driving a Fiero (yes, I’ll stick with a Fiero) with a bit more (okay, a lot more) juice.

I actually think I’m starting to develop bad habits with the duke due to it’s lack of speed. I feel that I’m not learning to apply the brakes at the "usual" points on the track. Although I was locking up my brakes during the Corvette Club autocross (due to the long straightaways), I found that yesterday at the VCMC autocross (which was much more twisty) I was able to go around the entire track without barely applying my brakes at all during a couple of the runs. Just letting up on the gas was usually enough as the duke hadn’t built up enough speed between turns to make anything other than engine braking all that necessary. Sad but true.

Driving the mighty duke has been a great introduction to autocross, and I’m not ready to pull the plug on driving her quite yet, but I see a quicker, faster Fiero in my future on the track.

You can get a run in my car and see the difference...having the tools does help:).

Honestly Brian, I really wasn't suggesting we actually swap cars for a run, but if you're making the offer... Hell yeah!

Rather than swapping cars for a run, you guys should co-drive your car.  Start off co-driving the Duke for a full day.  Gives Brian time to get accustomed to the lower power, softer suspension and slippery tires.

At the following event, co-drive Brian's nicely set up GT.  Once again, gives you time to get used to what you can do with his car.

When you co-drive cars like this, you will learn a lot faster.

That's more or less what I did, my uncle co-drove my car with me one day then another day I drove my dad's car with him. Both were good experiences and I learned a lot. Although the extra power and stickier tires were very nice, in the end I've found it just as much fun and challenging to drive my own car, albeit not as rewarding when looking at the times a few days later.

Patrick, I'd be curious to see how much faster you are than me in your GT. I bet in a course like we drove yesterday you would be at most 3 seconds faster than me. I think the bigger gain would be with the tires and little suspension tweaks.

Actually, I'm beginning to suspect that I have the opposite problem with the suspension on the '84. Keep in mind that I've cut two full coils off both the front and back springs. The remaining coils are very stiff.

When I go around corners at the track with any speed, the car reminds me of a stone skipping across a pond the way it wants to understeer and slide sideways.

In regards to your suggestion Allan, as great as it would be for me, I can't honestly see enough of an upside for Brian. I don't think it would be much of a thrill for Brian to be putt-putting around the track in my mighty duke.

Colby, you might get your wish. Perhaps I'll drive my '86 GT at the next autocross I participate in.

The fact that it's an automatic kind of turns me off, but at least it does have a bit more "oomph" to it than the duke when the pedal is to the metal.

When we got to the autocross site early (7:30 AM) Sunday morning, the entire Pitt Meadows Airport area was fogged in. The fog eventually cleared for us by race time, but it was kind of neat for awhile.

I found some great photos posted online which show the changes in the fog as the sun came up.

Geez, I might need at least one more day of track time before I'd be willing to risk that bet. Heh heh...

If I was to come across as any cockier than that, I might be mistaken for Tristan.

They posted no less than http://www.vcmc.ca/forum/showthread.php?10114-beat-the-president-VCMC-3-NCT-5-pics-videos-feedback-and-result. - seven lists of times . I don't understand much of it.

All I know is that Brian was a whole lot faster than me, and I was a tiny bit faster than Colby.

Oh, and Colby and I were not the slowest. All hail the mighty dukes!

http://www.vcmc.ca/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=287&d=1287462792 - Index Results (best times adjusted based on class and sorted)

Does that count as getting sorted? The other ones are only relevant to those who were in a more competitive class and there's one which has only novices (but we weren't listed as novices for some reason).

It's because we're just SO good! Yeah, that's the reason.

So Colby, any idea what our indexed times would've been if we hadn't been bumped up a class because of our chopped springs and larger wheels?

Colby, posting that list wrecks the whole page of this thread! It's no fun having to scroll back and forth and back and forth to read the posts (unless you've got a really w-i-d-e screen monitor).

Can you perhaps make the font smaller?

[EDIT] Okay, that works. Thanks!

I'll just calculate it and see...

Your indexed time would have dropped by 1.681 seconds to 38.563 (from 40.244) and put you in 73rd place rather than 82nd.
Mine would have dropped by 1.710 seconds to 39.243 (from 40.953) and put me in 80th place rather than 83rd.

That's compared to Brian's indexed time of 37.354. So putting on nice tires and competing in the stock class and we may actually be able to beat Brian on indexed times! I hadn't even considered that would be possible in a duke.

I'm getting my ratios or whatever they're called for the calculations http://www.scca-chicago.com/solo/indexes/rtp2010.html - here .

Aww, you're no fun.  Is it any better now? It looked fine with room to spare in 1366x768.

I run a standard resolution of 1024 x 768 and the list is still too wide. The font sizes are still rather large. Can you make 'em smaller or move the columns closer together?

[EDIT] It's good now!

Moving the columns would be a lot of work since it's just text formatted with spaces. At this text size it's kind of hard to read now. It's been a long time since I've used a resolution as low as 1024x768, so it never even crossed my mind that it would be an issue.

It's fine on my monitor, but seriously, how often is anyone going to need to read that posted list?

For anyone who has a problem with it (or who really wants to study it in detail), it's pretty easy to click on your earlier links and see the lists in their full glory.

Anybody too lazy to click a link may read it, but other than that it's just redundant. At least if those links die there's a copy here.

I didn't even know what this car was 'til I saw one yesterday participating at the autocross. Have a look at it here...

It's quite a car!

I was curious as to what a VW Fox GL was (a car which was just slightly faster than me yet slower than Patrick yesterday) and came across http://members.shaw.ca/icollect01/index.html - this . It turns out that's a website dedicated to that exact same car that was there yesterday. Looks like he's in a similar situation with something like 80-90 HP.

My buddy at BCIT has a Fox, it's awesome. Weighs about as much as my left shoe. On a full tank of gas.

Yeah Patty, that GTR is pretty attractive, and definitely fast (Although I dislike the fact it was given the Skyline designation in Japan).

Considering that this very light 2160 lb VW Fox GL also has a more efficient SOHC engine, I think we smoked him with our heavier Fieros and old school dukes.
