A high pitched whine has developed from my front left wheel. Almost like that sound when you rub a wine glass. I first started on my way home from autocross Sunday. Doesn't show up until about 10 minutes of driving and is intermittent, disappears completely while brakes are applied, even only just barely enough to turn on the brake lights will make it go away. I took off the rotor/caliper the other day and had a look around and didn't see anything out of the ordinary, after putting it back together the noise went away for a day before coming back. When I had the wheel off, and was just spinning the rotor, it kept getting caught in one spot but only when spinning forward and went away after taking things apart and putting it back together. Brake pad material can get embedded into the metal at
varying levels of impregnation over inconsistent areas of the rotor (...without rotor warp the rotation still catches in spots...) Try spinning the rotor by hand and run sand paper over the disk until you are satisfied something has been changed. Just a thought. Cheers |

Is it the brake pad wear indicator thingie (whatever it's called) just starting to scrape the rotor?

If I have time this weekend I will try to run a dial gauge around it to see if it is warped. And the wear indicator thingie is far from touching the rotor, lots of pad left. Let's just hope it's not your '88 (almost-impossible-to-find-replacements) front wheel bearings acting up.

This is just your pads vibrating. No big deal, just annoying. You fix that by spreading a little silicone sealant on the piston side (back side) of the pads. Some pads come with anti-vibration plates that work also. Try it, you'll like it....:) The Dawg ------------- You dream it up....I'll make it |
