On my 84 2.5L i found out my EGR valve is broken and has been strapped in by a coat hanger wire by one of the previous owners.

So the question is, if I do a block off plate is there any issues that i will come across by doing one?

btw I searched and can only find info about the 2.8L and they have to reprogram the ecu on some of them. Is this also the case with the 2.5L?

I'm sure there are others in here with the exact opposite opinion, but everything I've seen about EGR systems seems to suggest simply repairing it. Given that the EGR system doesn't engage at WOT, you're not exactly sacrificing power in fixing it, and you have a better chance at passing NOx at AirCare with it in.

As for there being any issues, I'll let the Doc or David answer for sure, but I know in most cars, the ECU will monitor the MAP/EBP/DPFE (Ford only) to ensure that the EGR is functioning properly, and if the Fiero is the same, it will set a code if it can't flow.

I don't have AirCare where I live so that's not a major concern for me. I just would like to spend money elsewhere other than emission control.

I think i found my answer here:

So basicly it sounds like it will run a little bit leaner, thus causing knock in some applications. So from what my knowledge and from what I have read, run a higher octane or possibly retard timing or both if its knocking badly.

Does this sound correct?

If you want to spend less money on gas, replace the EGR valve.

Yeah dude, not exactly Mr. Environmentalist myself, but given the amount of effort required (ECU flash, plugging it, higher octane fuel, less power at peak RPM due to spark retard) you're honestly just better off replacing the damn thing. lol
