It looks like we will be having a Whistler run this year on Sunday July 31st.  There has been a ton of talk about some people also doing the PEAK to PEAK while there.

I will be uploading info about this shortly.

NEW PLAN below.

Peak to Peak:

Damien
Glenn
Jim
Maureen

Just Drive:

Harrison
Patrick
Steve
Ken

Once the info is up, please chime in quickly as there isn't a ton of time left to plan this.

Michelle and I are good either way but really enjoyed our experience on the mountain 2 years ago.  We highly recommend it.

Cheers,

The Dawg

NEW PLAN!
  • So, we leave McDonalds at 8:30AM.
  • Get to Whistler about 10:00AM after a stop to stretch our legs along the way.
  • The "ride only" types hang out for 3 hrs while the rest of us go up the mountain.
  • The "peak to peaker's" rejoin the ride only folks between 1:00 and 1:30.
  • 2:00 departure for Vancouver
  • Back to Lower Mainland about 3:30PM.

Here are some details regarding the Peak to Peak tickets.

EDIT:  The new plan is to all go up together.  Then some of us go up the mountain for 3 hours or so and the rest just hang out in the village till we get back.  Then we all head home together.

I'm supposing that we would get to Whistler, hang out together for a while.  Maybe have a bite to eat and then say goodbye to the "drive only" types.

We could then go up the Whistler lift to the Roundhouse.  Hang out, maybe take the summit lift to the very top, enjoy the view.  After 2 or 3 hours on the mountain, we take the actual Peak to Peak gondola to Blackcomb Mnt and ride the chair down to the village.

How does that sound?

We will head up with the group, but probably won't do the peak to peak and just hang out in the village or something.

Last year taking Frankie up to Whistler was fun as the tourists seemed to get a kick out of seeing a husky up there. So I expect to take Frankie up there again this year and Anne might come up as well (depending on her schedule). I'm not sure what Anne wants to do in regards to the "Peak to Peak", but I'm just as happy to walk around the Whistler area for a couple hours with the Frankster.

Joanne and I will do the same as we did last year ... we will hide out in one of the pullovers on the highway and wave a hearty greeting to all of the Fieros passing by.  If you want, you can honk your horn when you see us! Just look out for a red Fiero, and don't stop because we're sorry but we can't join you for the whole trip!

If I do make it, I will likely not do the peak to peak. I would have done it 3 times in the last 2 years already.    It's pretty spectacular to do it at least once.

Okay, some of us are going to be tied up all day Saturday doing autocross and we won't be able to post until Saturday evening, so we gotta know soon... what's the verdict for Sunday?

We haven't heard for awhile from some of the names on the list above. Ken says he can't go now, but Damien (and Michelle), Maureen, Colby and myself have stated we still wish to go. Any word from Glenn, Jim, Harrison, and Steve?

For anyone who's sitting on the fence, and/or hasn't driven to Whistler on the new highway, honestly... it's a nice drive and Whistler is a pretty neat place in the summer. Last year was my first time there EVER, and I quite enjoyed it. We all had fun.

So, who else wants to go? Let us know, the more the merrier.

I guess the best thing for everyone to do is to check this thread at about 7:30am Sunday morning and see what's happening. (It'll take Colby 45 minutes or so to get from Abottsford to the designated meeting spot in Burnaby.)

Okay, after being in the hot sun all day at the autocross, I'm going to bed...

Your posting this late on the night before the run and wondering if it's still a go????  What has changed to make you think it's not a go?

Michelle and I will be at McDonalds around 8:00AM.  Since it's drizzling as I type, we will have to make a final decision at that time.  It will have to be a literal down pour before we cancel.

So, decide for yourselves as always.

See ya

Not hearing anything from anyone for almost 24 hours after posting Friday night caused me a wee bit of concern.

Okay, looks like the rain is over. Frankie and I will be at the McDonald's parking lot at 8:30.

I guess I'm the first one home.

Good run... five Fieros... mostly sunshine... no tickets.

More to come later, including pictures from other members.

Right now I'm going to sit in the backyard with the Frankster. She's got her bowl of water, I've got a cold beer.

Posted By: Patrick
Date Posted: 31 July 2011 at 5:38pm

Okay, I'm finished my beer.

It was a good day for the run. As stated earlier, mostly sunshine... with just a sprinkling of rain to help keep the dust down.

Last year I drove the GT (automatic, bone stock). This year I drove the duke (5-spd, lowered, Sensa-Trac struts/shocks, rear sway bar). Less power, but way more fun driving the duke on the highway. I had no trouble keeping up with the V6's/V8, just had to shift more often! We all mostly behaved ourselves on the highway.

Damien and Michelle led the way (they had the radar detector!), Steve brought a buddy to ride along in his Northstar powered GT, Maureen was in her '88, and Colby came in from Abbotsford with his Formula to round out the crew.

I had Frankie with me, and for the first time ever (when taking her anywhere), I forgot doggie bags.  (I'm not referring to what a restaurant gives you.) I proceeded to disgust Colby by accidently getting my fingers a little too close to, ummm... well, you can guess what they might've gotten too close to while trying to clean up after the Frankster without proper doggie bags.  Oh well, nothing that a little soap and water didn't wash off.

We had a great lunch at a restaurant that Steve recommended. (Yes, I washed my hands beforehand.) We now want to have our club meetings there.

T'was a good day. Thanks to everyone who participated.

This run has got to be one of my favorites.  I really like Arlington also, but this one is local and easier to organize.

I would like to thank everyone who came out.  It was great sharing this experience with you all.  We had no mechanical malfunctions to deal with and surprisingly less police presence than expected.  My relatively cheap radar detector worked great on the highway.

I was worried at the start that we might not get decent weather but as the day rolled on it just got better and better.  In the end we decided not to go up the mountain because Whistler had low cloud cover when we first arrived.  Once the clouds lifted we could see a fair amount of snow hanging around up there.

As Patrick mentioned, Michelle and I did point most of the way.  There being only 5 cars it was relatively easy to keep us together.  I think we all enjoyed the ride to spite the low speeds.  Don't get me wrong, there were a few opportunities to open up at strategic points along the way.  All in all I think we demonstrated great restraint.  I know I sure did anyway.

It was fun as always.

I would like to make special mention of Steve's suggestion for the eatery we went to.  Wow is all I can say.  The prices were normal but the food and service were 5 star!  Maybe he can chime in and mention the name of this wonderful establishment since I've forgotten.

Can't wait till next year.

I hear it was a great run, and am glad for Dawg taking all the time to put this event together and stay on top of the thread.  Wish I could have been there, but a close friend of mine had his stag on Saturday and got Married on Sunday.

On a side note,

Let's clarify who "we" is.

I suggested we go to the left according to the map (which I think ended up being the correct direction), but nooooooo, we had to rely on space age technology instead... and then ultimately have the womenfolk point us towards the restaurant.

We're fortunate we didn't have to turn in our man-cards over that.
