Hey all I'm new to this site and right off the bat I have
a technical question. I hope you guys can help a girl
out.

I have a 1986 GT automatic. She runs like a top minus one
thing. Randomly she just dies. I mean no warning nothing
just dies while driving then can't restart unless it sits
for a few days. I changed my starter coil which I thought
was the issue seeing as it was shot. Seemed to work for a
minute but then the same thing started happening again.
Unfortunately now she is sitting in my garage which
saddens me. I was told it might be the ICM. Does that
seem like something that would cause that? Or should I
dig around under the hood for something else?

Thanks guys. Any help would be epic.

odds are its the ignition module(in the distributor) or the coil. pretty common issue with fieros.

locked away right now. She is a gorgeous car that should be
shown off to everyone. ;P

Let me attempt to help solely based on my past experience involving my Fiero dieing, when does the car usually die?

I had the pleasant experience of dealing with two ordeals in which ultimately led to my car to die -- sometimes even in the middle of the road!

The first one was so darn obscure, ridiculous and unfathomable: the battery wiring of my Fiero had been burned/melted. The mechanic told me that the battery wiring, being close to the engine and all, had melted to the point where it was unreliable. Just before this diagnosis, my car would occasionally die and wouldn't start for days. I had gotten a new battery and alternator initially to address this problem!

The second one, the fairly recent one, was that my fuses needed to be replaced, with my ignition module and rotor, etc as they were all malfunctioning -- they somehow had became wet, I never understood how that turned out to be. My car would work fine and all, but when accelerating up a hill, my car would die -- engine revving seem to trigger it to die. The thing with this was that my Fiero would be able to turn back right on again without any problem.

If it pretty much goes 'click' and shuts off like a light - ignition module as stated.  But do yourself a BIG favor, and grab a complete remanufactured distributor (can't say where to go as you haven't said where you are).  The new ones have a MUCH (!!) better reluctor in them.

If it sputters a bit before dying, check your fuel pump.  They've been known to croak, then magically come back to life after cooling off a bit - but they just get worse then die completely.

Next time it dies, keep your eye on the tachometer while you turn the
engine over. If the needle moves a little and stays steady, your ignition
system is ok. If it jumps around or does nothing, it is your ignition
system. (very common).

Seems to have been the ICM. I made a few successful test
drives. But if she dies again I think its time to replace
the distributor.
