Subject: Partial loss of power above 3000 rpm

So lately (since monday on the way home from work) my car
has been acting a bit funny. Once on each drive since then
my engine suddenly loses most of its power above 3000 rpm,
some times it lasts longer than other times. This is also
accompanied by a sound like the belt is trying to squeal
but is not quite slipping. The only way to fix the problem
on the move is to run out 2nd gear at WOT all the way to
5000 rpm. The power usually comes back suddenly around 45-
4700 rpm. Any Ideas as to what could cause this?
Engine is a 88 duke with DIS.

Are you experiencing low voltage at the same time?
When I had no splash guards the belt would get wet and slip (not always audibly), but I would get dim lights and a stumble and no power. Low volts affects the injection system (Less fuel) and ignition system (lower energy spark).
Is it consistent in dry and wet days?

The voltage is fine so that's not the issue. I had a chat
with my mechanic and he thought maybe the Crank Position
Sensor is dying which is throwing the timing off.
I also think I have a blown catalytic converter so maybe a
intermittent exhaust blockage?

Ah yes. I think what you may have is chunks of the cat converter stuck in the muffler. I had this; when it cleared the exhaust note dropped 3 octaves and the car took off. Maybe that's what is going on for you.

Try dropping the pipe right in front of the cat and go for a boot. Watch out for 5-0. They might not like you. ;)
Also, if your fuel filter is over 6 months old change it (that's a stretch, but... it's a good idea anyhow!).
