OK. I know this is probably an open issue that might be
longer in reading than my attention span, but reading some of the stuff and listening to others about "Bump Steer" I wonder if there is a reasonable (cost and time wise), fix to this problem. There is some mention of a "Held" ( Something like that) kit, and others say it's not worth it , and still others say just a good wheel alignment and tight parts will do fine.Then again some say a sway bar front and rear corrects it. Are you asking in regards to an '88? If I recall correctly, "bump steer" is much more of an issue with '84-'87 Fieros.

Ya Glenn 88's don't really have any measurable Bump Steer issues. However on the 85-87 not the 84.
You can greatly eliminate the bump steer by lowering the car and adding a rear sway. Bump steer is caused by suspension movement, especially under a hard corner where you might have a tendency to unload the inside springs. By lowering it just an inch with stiffer springs, the suspension does move as much up an down which reduces the bump steer. Also adding the rear bar keeps the 2 control arms semi tied together. So when you take a really hard corner and the right side try's to compress the rear side will get push up too so the suspension does not unload as much and when you do get back on the power in the straight, your wheel will not have towed in or out as much. Using a front bar, from a scrap car you build a rear bar for setup for under 50 bucks, or you can order a rear bar kit for around 200 bucks IIRC. Now then there is also the Bump Steer Eliminator kit. It costs about 400 bucks but gets you tie rod ends, some threaded stock and some 2"x2" angle iron. Very simple kit to make yourself. Now Now Patrick don't take that out of context. The 84 has just as many problems as the 85-87 however due to the 84 slightly different front suspension, you can't just simply lower it. Bump stops need to be shortened and I can't remember why but the turning radius was larger on the 84 so they changed it in 85 to make the car turn in better.
I meant my fixes apply to 85-87 cars, with the 84 you have to do extra things that you don't have to do with the 85-87 cars. There were also other things like the 84 I believe was the only year to have the "granny" rack and pinion as an option. It was offered on the 3.32 4spd cars as well as the base model automatics. ... Dave, the topic is "bump steer". Yes, there are certainly some differences between '84 and '85-'87 Fieros, but in regards to the original topic... "bump steer", these years are all the same. As far as I'm aware, the Fiero rear suspension remained basically unchanged from '84-'87 (except for variations in spring rates). |
