Happy New Year everyone!
I hope everyone had a good Christmas season.
The first meeting of 2014 is coming up this weekend, saturday the 11th.
Usual time and place:
6:00 pm
Ricky's all day grill in Langley
8720 204 Street
Langley, BC V1M 2Y5
just on the north side of hwy 1 off 200th
2013 wasn't much for the club, with many people's fieros off the road,
and life getting in the way and all that. Many meetings had only a
couple people show up, and there weren't many events.
2014 will be much better.
Door prizes will return, we will have more club events, and do more
Fiero things.
2014 dues will be due, and are still 30$ for the year.
Topics to discuss will be events for 2014, and how we want to organize
ourselves for this year.
I would like to get as much input from everyone as possible to make
sure it is a good year for everyone involved. Even if you can't attend the
meeting or are out of town, post in this thread and we can extend our
discussions here as well.
I will be there in my Fiero, so hope to see many of you there.

I'll add Kens post from his other thread here to keep everything
together.

I don't see any announcement for a January meeting
yet so ...
Most of my Saturdays are usually tied up of late but this week, I
managed to make a scheduling swap and if I can get away from the
family, I'll be there.....with my Fiero.
Also, up for discussion, I was somewhat alarmed to find out that not
very many people who are members of the club paid dues last year.
This is a member-run club. A few things cost money.
This website and a place for storage of all our information, spare parts,
physical documentation (books, magazines, manuals), as well as
putting up money for club events, drives that require food, etc. all cost
money.
Some of us have had a rough time of it of late. Me included. Many
have been unemployed for extended periods. So I can understand that
discretionary spending is being looked at seriously.
So....maybe I should propose the club leadership meet up, discuss
what we want to budget for, and try and lower the cost of club dues. I
think everybody should contribute even a nominal amount.
There will be some things we will have to cut out of the club
budget....like renting a barn to store parts. Subsidizing drives.
However, if we have a large dues paying membership, we could look at
subsidizing some of our major events like paying part of the entry to the
PPPCC show n shine and food at Arlington or admission to Hellsgate.
But maybe we shouldn't pay for the whole thing.
I just don't want this club to become just a free forum. I want to see our
cars on the road and at gatherings so people will take notice.
Understanding full well, that sometimes life has other priorities than
driving our Fieros.
Okay....who's making the monthly announcement for this week's club
meeting?

No offence to whomever posted http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/rds/cto/4278842745.html - the ad in Craigslist (it's a good idea), but the time is wrong and the date is confusing.
West Coast Fieros of British Columbia monthly meeting is Saturday January 11/14 at Rickys Restaurant at 88th and 204th in Walnut Grove (Langley B.C.) at 7pm. Come one, Come all. Even if you just want to find out. For further info check out out website at http://www.westcoastfieros.com - www.westcoastfieros.com |

You're absolutely correct Patrick, the time should have
been 6:00pm The date? Don't understanding why that would
be confusing. Jan 11/14 is a normal way to put it. I made a
mistake on the time,as mostly the meeting don't start till
7 as members generally converse outside (in better
weather)about everything, but at least someone is doing it,
as I too, have many things to do. Hope to see you at the
meeting tonight, it been a long time since you've been
there, and it members attendance and participation that
drives the club.

It looks like it says jan 11/ jan 14 rather than January 11th, 2014.
See you tonight.

@Ken I will be at the meeting tonight. I'll have some information for you regarding domain and stuff.
@Glenn, that was very cool to get the Craigslist Add up. I imagine I am not the only person with an RSS feed from Craigslist that sends me instant notification from all FIERO items posted to Craigslist. I saw your add up from last week.
Also would the person that has the club scan tool please bring it to the meeting tonight. I need to check something on my car. I have a sporadic idle miss, causing higher than normal hydrocarbons. I think my Module/Pickup coil might be on the verge of going out, but I want to check TPS and MAP voltages before I toss in new parts.

I guarantee that some people will confuse the "14" as January 14th (as Harrison alluded to in his last post). I'm aware that you're referring to 2014, but it's probably unnecessary to mention the year.

Glenn, I give you and Harrison full credit for taking the club under your wings in an effort to revitalize it.

Well, several years ago I stepped up to the plate to help out (when Dave first wanted to step back), and I got a ton of flack from certain members for my efforts. Seemed there was a number of the "old guard" who couldn't handle a change. Did they volunteer to help out? Of course not. So, there's a reason why enthusiastic members such as myself and Tristan (and perhaps several others) stopped coming to meetings. However, it appears as though the particular members who did their best to suck the fun out of the club are no longer involved. Therefore, I'm now re-considering my decision to avoid club meetings. Johnny has been trying for ages to get me to come out again, so we'll see.
IMO, the club should discuss how the $6 bridge toll (round trip) affects members (and potential members) who live west of the Port Mann. If the meetings are to remain where they currently are (in Langley), it's now $72 a year to attend all meetings... not even including fuel costs. Living in Vancouver, it would be at least $5 in gas (probably more) to get out to Langley and back. In total it costs someone in Vancouver/Burnaby/New West a minimum $162 a year (including the $30 membership fee) to attend the meetings, plus the cost of the meals of course. It all adds up, and it might be enough to keep people away. Just something to consider.

That is certainly something that wasn't considered, however in October I believe we discussed the pros and cons about moving meetings around to different locations, as to have better participation from members in Vancouver, Burnaby Etc. I would always be open to further ideas about this, but as pointed out, the benefit of a fixed location is that people always know where it is. BUT that doesn't necessary mean it has to be where it is now.
I would like to add that the form is a fantastic place to touch base with others and to get information, however the club runs, meetings, and participation is what make West Coast Fieros of British Columbia a club. Not the form. I urge all members who can make meetings to come and discuss your ideas and concerns, for with your input we can continue to move forward. The form has a cost to the club and through meeting and dues this avenue is funded. Loose the club and I would imagine the form would close. Maybe?? Discussions about revenue ( October meeting) can give inaccurate results if members are not there to be involved. So come out everyone.
We are looking forward to a good Summer, one with a couple of runs, Arlington, the All Pontiac Show ( which we need better involvement with) and some other events, but if no one attends.... then we have nothing. Winter is hard on all, as most cars are away for this period, but Spring is on the way.

Well, the other option is to perhaps have a variable membership fee... possibly depending on where a person has to travel from, and/or whether they wish to partake in the draws at each meeting. A lower membership fee for those who don't need more "stuff" and have no interest in the draws may be one way to possibly attract more members who might not wish to pay $30 to join the club. It may seem like a silly suggestion, but there's obviously a reason why membership and attendance at club functions has drastically diminished.
Anyway, we can talk about it tonight. Johnny has convinced me to attend the meeting.

I'll be there. Despite high winds happening, I will still bring my Fiero. Anybody interested in a drive to the Tsawassen Ferry Terminal afterwards via the new highway?

Now that you mention it, we have done a video chat once before. The
problem with that is the wifi at the restaurant is very slow and video
takes a lot of data on phones. We could look into some sort of live
stream. Maybe someone more tech oriented can chime in on this. I feel
like it may have been discussed before though.

Great idea! Somebody sign up for a Ustream account and we can stream our meetings live! Unfortunately, my wife has commandeered my MacBook Air on me. She uses it more than I do.

I think if you have an Apple device we can use Facetime to stream the
meeting to you from my iPod touch next time.
Maybe we can arrange to do that for members that can't make it to the
meetings.

FYI Ricky's is now a "Shaw Go" WiFi Hotspot. So anyone with a Shaw email account can register their device and use it at Ricky's. http://www.shaw.ca/wifi/ - http://www.shaw.ca/wifi/ So a laptop with a good Webcam like Glens would be all you need. We talked about doing this in the past, but could not decide on how to do it. I really like the idea. P.S. Thank You Ken for posting up the pics.

I suspect that relying on a laptop's built-in camera and mic would result in less than desirable audio and video quality. The wide-angle lens would make everything more than a few feet away tiny, and I believe the mic would have a problem picking up sound clearly from any distance more than a couple of feet as well. However, we won't know for sure until we try.
If someone (Glenn perhaps) has a large room at home, maybe he could set up his laptop at one end, stand at the other, and we could do a dry run to see how well it works. That would take some of the pressure off from trying to do the first "broadcast" in the midst of a meeting.

Happy you all see it the same way.Was going to just jump right in last post but i thought i should see how you all feel about it first.I would like to help the Club what is needed to do this-Laptop/cameras, ect!and use my Shaw/Wifi all so.Patrick made a good point about the Hardware needed-------------------------------------------------Patri ck I suspect that relying on a laptop's built-in camera and mic would result in less than desirable audio and video quality.--Yes i think so.--an Ken I think if you have an Apple device we can use Facetime to stream the

I have everything Mac/HD/FW cams ect! an its just sitting here doing nothing,I could put together G4/Laptop,built to stream, with a FW/HD cam-not a built in one,on a tripod with a cable, portable. that would stream Video and record in DV for up/load after the meeting. might as well use it.This is a trial run so there will prob,be changes to smooth everything out. if an when it could happin. One thing is when you have more than one person,up on a small screen-Video/Voice- an they all happin to be talking at the same time, its choppy an the band with drops off.Wouldnt work so good with 4 or 5 people yaping! on at the same time,so no voice,an if all the on line members could only watch/listen to the web cast of the meeting an maby have a#1 common chat windo open for members to be able to chime in on at the meeting.i hope somone else has some ideas,an just let me know what you may think an what may be needed for this, hope i can help--Cheers all Joe/Darc

Joe, I'm guessing you were referring to a firewire hi-def camcorder... is that right?
One thing to keep in mind is that we don't want a situation where someone at the meeting is required to be the "camera man". It needs to be set up in such a manner that the camera is located on a tripod and aimed at a "sweet spot" that's the best place for someone to stand who's addressing the members in attendance. This would help ensure that the person talking could be seen and heard properly on the streaming connection. Harrison will need to learn to project his voice.
Another thing I think would be cool, would be to have the S-video output (or HDMI if available) from a second laptop computer connected to the large flat panel TV on the wall in the room that we use at the restaurant. That way all of us in attendance at the meeting could see exactly what is being streamed online.
Anyway, something for us to ponder...

Just another FYI, the 42" LCD TV in the meeting room has an HDMI input. I have used it in the past to play content from my laptop onto the large LCD. SO if Artic is suggesting a common chat window, or even just to view what is being streamed, you can hook to the large TV.
Now then as to Facetime, I would try and stay away from any proprietary software. I don't own a single Mac device and I know of at least a few club members that are in the same place. We have chosen not to use Mac software. I would love to just have a website that people could go to, so they could see the stream live. If you do record it, just make sure that it is a live upload so no one gets stuck encoding/uploading the video after the meeting.

Did not see Daves post befor i posted this, took me a long time.
Yes Patrick, your on the right track.Ive bin at this ?Video stuff for over 20 years an have a small production studio at my house. Many years playing around with Macs an Video/audio equipment.i just do it for fun know-- LOL So as for the club meetings iam sure i can supply what you guys need to do this.an yes some one could set there IPod IPhone Laptop, up on a tripod an just stream to the web.Would work ok to.A DV/FireWire camcorder is a nice 1080dpi @400MHZ to a Macbook, its on a cable and a tripod, moveable.then you can use any number of Apps to stream it-Skype-IChat-Face time- pick your choice theres many more ways to stream Video. What would be real cool is to stream it directly to the-WCF- server, then you only have one server to push it to,not like most of them that bounce you around-Choppy vid- if you want audio then the mic in the cam tends to pick up everything- baby crying, music, loud people in the next room.A separate mic @ the center of the table would work well.If Rickeys has a roll down screen, then you could use a HDMI projector to display everything-Big screen-just gave mine away,an now i could have used it!ill looking for a used one now.lots here to take in an let me no if it helped,or i can help in any way, cheers all. If it came down to it, I can build a custom page for the site that will allow live video to be sent and anybody could watch it. It won't work on mobile, but anybody with any type of computer could use and watch it.
