I registered today. You guys know I love autocross, but geez... $71.66 in total fees.

I realize this is a double-pad event, but it wasn't that long ago we were paying $40 to zip around for the day.

Weather should be fine...

I got an email today from Karelo informing me that they had made a mistake with the GST and will refund the difference. $68.25 was supposed to have been the grand total.

I must be slipping... I should've realized immediately that a mistake had been made when I registered.

I've been kind of busy. I'm registered, but I haven't had time to adjust anything on my car. I've got some odd sounds coming from the right-rear wheel that I need to look at.

Colby and I were both out today to help Rich set up the course. We were able to make some suggestions. The course is a little different than usual. It's quite... Fiero friendly.

Should be fun tomorrow!

It's definitely one of the stranger courses I've seen, but it should be fun. It flows fairly well.

Oh yeah, I wanted to mention... When I got to the site at 5 PM or so, there was a big sweeper/vacuum truck just finishing thoroughly cleaning up the entire double pad. The asphalt is cleaner than I've ever seen it. Should be great traction on Saturday. We'll need it!

3 G-circles.. indeed I was skeptical. what fun it was!

Patrick.. are these yours?

Alrighty, here are the links to 3 videos. Please excuse the repetitive nature of the runs... some choppy sound also...

I was returning to the starting grid after another masterful run, and what did I discover... but Gary adding some kind of magical "Gypsy Juice" to his tires.

Caught in the act!

Probably something that brother Al told him to do. Those Johanson's are a shifty lot.

Posted By: AllanJ
Date Posted: 02 August 2014 at 9:15pm
It was indeed hot today. I need more anti-dehydration
juice.

Gary, you drove AWESOMELY today! Keep kicking ass out
there. Nice weight loss too - and that helps as well.

Maybe in the off-season you can work on your cameras.

Some neat views, but the wind noise is a problem. Mind
you, sometimes it sounds like you have a turbo so that
was kinda cool.

I wish my system was portable from car to car. Just a
note about wind noise, in my case the mic is on the floor
behind the center console and it still picks up wind
noise. Probably more a function of driving over 100+mph
with both windows down though. I need to deal with it at
some point.

If you get an separate camera, you can put your phone somewhere safe and use its audio. I considered doing that, but I've found a location that seems to work okay.

I like that perspective, and the audio is pretty good, but I'm curious what windows/sunroof you have open? When I've shot video from that location with the side windows down, it sounds like hurricane city.

It's suction cupped to the almost the back of the tilted-open sunroof. Both side windows are open.

Hmmm... I'll have to try it from there. When I've had the camera suction-cupped to the back window looking forward, I liked what I saw but not what I heard.

It's funny how wind noise gets everywhere. The company I
bought my data logger from sells a "dead kitten" mic
cover. Apparently no dead kittens were used to make it.
lol!

(sigh....trying to get a pic to show but it won't)

i may try a cover of some sort. our cat is in use right now.. but his fur is up for grabbs
to get pictures to show up, i have put them in my public drop box folder, copied the public link then surrounded the link with ""

that works for me and i make the image small so it fits most monitors

if there is a better way, someone pls chime in

The "better way" will be when the forum software is updated and all the features work properly. Colby will be taking care of this... probably after his relocation.

Yeah, it's been a little frustrating having to depend on "workarounds" to post images here the last few months... but Colby will fix it!

Although not entirely clear on the concept, it appears that Gary has experimented with this idea previously.

wind noise.

That was a lot of work... Thanks Colby!

Gary, your time was great.  You need to help me implement the secondary throttle body idea I have so I can try and catch you!

I might mention that the "best" time our friend Ken Butcher got in his Vette occurred when he missed the entire last G-circle on his first run!  His actual best time brings him down quite a few notches... from 23rd to 37th place.

We used to post scans of the course after each autocross, and I think it's time to bring back this tradition. It helps to make sense of the videos posted, plus Colby and I had a hand in designing and setting up this particular course.

The stop box was changed by Rich after Colby and I left... and I very much disliked the angle of it. I also added a red arrow to the course map to show where Gary, Colby and I were standing during our track duty. It was dangerous there (before we added a wall of cones) as drivers would come around that G-circle and then for some reason make a beeline for our station!

Posted By: Patrick
Date Posted: 04 August 2014 at 2:36pm

I tried to do something different with this video upload. It's actually five different runs combined into "one", ummm... memorable run.  (Edited using YouTube's own video editor.)

Make sure Annotations aren't turned off while watching this on YouTube. I've added some descriptive comments.

No, it isn't a music video. The song at the start was on the radio while I was waiting my turn to go... and I really like that song so I included a bit of it.

And I'm sorry Gary, but there's some  language used again.

Cool vid compilation, Patrick. I thought the stop
box angle was a neat element. You needed to be careful.
I think I mentioned to Gary to be careful there to avoid
a spin. It would help your time to be aggressive
diving in there, but it would be easy to overdo it.

For your scary work station, yeah - it's scary. It's
easy to see who wasn't looking ahead.

Gary kicked butt. In the Porsches, I think the order
was:

Rich (in Gary's car)
Bob Benson (RS America with Hoosiers)
Uli (GT2 RS)
Gary
...the rest...

I remember thinking as I lost control entering the stop box... "Oh gawd... I hope I don't hit the timing sensors!"

Nice videos Patrick. the best of the worst , and the other is just plain boring without all the camera shake and exciting audio .

I think I should give you some pointers on audio for video
it has gotta be like "Apocalypse Now" loud

Thanks Colby for doing the times. It does help to see how it all ended. I am itching for the next one. I have done some tuning and feel there is a bit more there for the next time..

Just so ya know... I edited out a second of video just as I came to a halt in the stop box. I had looked at the time clock and saw that my run was 64.9XX, the third occurrence that day of basically clocking the same time. I was a little perplexed and quickly expressed my disappointment. You'll now never know what I said.
