It has ben so long since I last updated this post and all you on the West Coast.
Car is pretty much done with new 3.4 DOHC engine and fully new driveline and suspension. I have redone a bunch of my wiring in the interior as I got it wrong so many years ago and just finishing the interior off now. I have it on the ground and running with a basic tune and will be taking it to the engine guys in Victoria after the holidays and getting a full alignment. All the final little pieces that take so long to do.... I have been updating Madmechanics.com over the years but the sad part is that the car has been sitting in the garage for a long time with not much progress year over year. Just been so many other life events going on that pull me away. I do plan to have the car on the road this spring though and wil decide then whether to sell or keep it while I go after my Countach. Take care everyone and stay safe in these very intersting times. Don |

Well. Now into October and still putting, or more honestly, not putting the car back together. I have the front clip back on and just installing the front trunk today. For some reason, everything is a little bit off on everything..... Very frustrating when you put so much time into getting everything together and right and then when you paint and go to put it back together, everything is just a bit off.....
Front trunk will be back together today and I hope to get the screen trim in place and then into the interior to finish it all up. Then I drive it.... I will put some pics up if the image poster is working again. I see a new forum look at feel. looks really nice...... Nice, image upload tool works again. Good job folks. Cheers Don |

Well end of June passed and still not on the road.
Other projects and needs taking priority during the summer. I am cleaning up the front trunk now and hope to have that wrapped up by the weekend. Windshield is installed and looks amazing. I just need to glue in the windshield trim surround as a have a bit of touch up to do on the driver's a-pillar before covering up. Still shooting for a summer drive but I am quickly running out of time...... |

Thanks Beken;
I will most likely drive the car for a couple months and put it up for sale as I enjoy building them. Don't really care that much about driving them..... :) Dr. Fiero. I was wondering what was going on with the images. I used the normal upload tool and the site was taking a very long time to load back up. I will try to get the images reloaded later today/tonight. Cheers Don |

Haven't been here for a while so thought I would
update the build log. I tried to set up my sail panel louvers to have a gas door 6 louvers up from the back edge. I found that I could get the gas door to open up with my hinge set-up but i ended up with interference issues with the front louver of the gas door. I wanted to see if I could do the gas door but oem Ferrari is opening the full louver panel so I am most likely gong to go that way in the end. The smaller gas door looked really good though..... I am now on to the targa top latching mechanisms. I decided to go with the same set-up that is on the older Firebird and Camaro t-top cars. There are pins front and back that slide into receivers on the inner roof side and clamp the top down on to the seals. I am using Firebird t-top seals so the set-up will work on my application as well. I made four latches front and back as I found that the Fiero roof section that is now the targa was a bit flexible and would not clamp down on to the rubber seal very well with just two latches each side. I have the latch sliders and pins built and attached to the targa and this week I am building the receivers to accept the pins. Should be pretty much weather proof by the end of the coming weekend. The targa will get convertible material glued to the outside and a fiberglass inner shell made and covered with head liner material to finish it all off and cover the mechanisms but still have everything accessible.. I am still not 100% happy with the lever mechanism as it offsets the pulling on the pins quite a bit as the lever is rotated. I may go with the same mechanism as the Firebird where there are two cams that intertwine and pull the pins back. More design to be done on that aspect before I finish off the levers. Then back to finishing off the interior wiring and install the interior and windshield and I am pretty much close to having this bad boy on the road..... Enjoy Don Try one last time...... Not much picture worthy updates. I have been working
through wiring this thing up. It has been way more work than i thought as the original wiring has been hacked several times and then I am moving switches etc. around so not doing myself any favours.... 20 od years of backyard mechanics and wiring have left many dead ends not terminated properly cut wires and connectors that go nowhere..... I hope to have the wiring finished up soon and then put the dash in for the last time and get the windscreen installed. More to come as I get more done. Cheers Don |

Finished up the fender vents. I will try Photobucket pics again.... I just now need to add mesh to the under sides and then send off to powder coating.
Cheers Don No idea why this is rotated again as it is properly oriented in Photobucket..... |

Finally getting some time back on the 308.
I got my passenger side fender vents made up last night. Will be low heat soldering them tonight. I made up two side plates with notches cut into them for placement of the fins. I then made the fins with the notches and put everything into the fender vent dry fit to get the right shape of each fin since the opening is not exactly square. I now need to make up some jigs to keep the side plates in the same orientation when I take them out to solder the fins in. I put three holes into the side plates and the opening and used my nut inserts with #8 screws to hold everything in place. I did end up with interference issues with the headlight motor frame and the pivots I made for the lights. I will need to redo the pivots to remove the interference. The last(front) fin is not in place in the pictures due to the interference with the headlight and I did not want to cut the front fin up until everything was set. Cheers Don I have some pictures but can't seem to update them here. I can't load directly and linking from photobucket the way I always used to doesn't seem to work now.... Not too many updates lately. Other projects and yard work.
Headlights have been molded. I need new fascias as the ones we used got ruined in the moding process. Just as well. We corrected a couple items when we molded anyway. I have since been working on finishing the items list on the front clip. vents, lights, etc. etc. I found a new process I did not know about. Low temp soldering of aluminum. What a cool process. I made the trunk vents out of metal and made a mess of the welding so I think I will redo the same vents in aluminum. I also redid the front grill with the low temp soldering. Again cool process and very clean. I also placed my windscreen in for front fender fitting etc. Really makes a difference for the look of the car. I plan to go after the fender vents this week so will have a few more updates soon. Cheers Don Can't seem to upload images today so I linked to photobucket. Hope it works. |

The headlight buckets are being molded this week as
another local 308 replica builder wants to do the front end upgrade that I did to my 308. Buckets should be out of the molds by next week and I can re- sand them and get them into the car. I also found someone local to do my carbon fiber on the console parts as well.Almost there.... Cheers Don Edited by Linlor |

I saw Johnny is updating the build thread areas so thought I better contribute as well., I am finally back at the car again and making the final push.... again....
I went through some carbon fiber tries a couple weeks ago and totally messed it up so had to sand everything back off and I am waiting to get the nerve back up to try again.... I needed to redo the headlight buckets as they weren't working for me. I made some jigs to get pivot placement and then tore the old Fiero headlight mount out and closed the bucket in to make a full and solid bucket. Much better arrangement to start with. I then made up some metal pivots similar to how I did the 355 buckets a few years ago. Worked out well on the passenger side and now I need to get after the driver's side over the next couple days. Cheers Don Ready for the eye surgery...... Old bucket internals. I had tried some expanding foam and it never set past a desert topping consistency so that put me over the edge to start it all over properly. I closed in the buckets and redid the front fascias so they fit better on the new rearranged buckets. Next was the pivot design and build. The long ends out past the pivot will be bent over to be used as the open stop. Passenger side installed in the car up and closed. Rinse and repeat for the driver's side over the rest of the week. Cheers Don |
