Sorry I couldn't make it ya'll...
Figures - I went to cure a 'small' exhaust leak in my '86GT (header gasket was leaking making it sound like a diesel) and turned it into a huge leak when one of the exhaust bolts snapped off in the head. ![]() Heading off tomorrow to once again search for an angle drill, and/or swing the engine to drill it out. Bleah. |

Yep, I always warn everyone, a simple manifold job has a 50/50 shot of turning into a major nightmare. You really think trying to drill and tap that sucker is going to work? I have never actually heard of anyone getting a clean drill and then tap while the head is still on the car. I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya.

Well - don't know if it'll hold yet (had to stop for dinner), but I got it drilled out, and ran a tap down it a couple of turns (stopped as I felt the tap was going to break off in the hole - now THAT is a huge problem, trust me!!!).
Cranked a stud in there, so then the threads only have to get abused once. Anyhow, we'll see tomorrow if it all holds together! |

So John, did you have to tilt the cradle and/or use a right-angle drill to get at the broken exhaust bolt?

Right angle drill.
Almost had to swing the cradle as well, but managed without. |

Well..... whir whir.... vrooooom! puuuuurrrrrrrrr.....
No more leak up top! Still have a bit down around the j-pipe area, but that's a separate issue. At least now it's quiet enough that I'll be able to locate & fix the other leak! |

Congrats! My GT's exhaust leak isn't too bad, but I should probably do the same repair to it someday.
