Today, I submitted my application, pictures, and aircare sheet for collector plates on my Fiero. I had asked my insurance agent when I should do it. She thought Jan 2 but would ask ICBC for me. ICBC told her I could submit it right away.

On the topic of needing an enclosed locked garage to put your car in, here is the reply I got:

Quote he is getting advise from someone who is mixing up policies. There is no storage requirement for normal collector plates.
Only if he is going for an agreed value policy does parking requirements come into effect, and I think there might be a dollar amount say over $75,000 or something before it becomes a requirement to have secured private storage.

Also, my insurance agent had told me collector plates for an old Porsche was in the $400 range. The Fiero should be under $300, but she isn't sure yet. I'll have to wait for approval from ICBC first.

Ken, I know we've been discussing this on the mailing list as well, but is it officially stated in an ICBC document that street parking overnight is not allowed?

Or is this just an assumption that is being made by us and/or by a misinformed insurance agent?

my family had a 1924 model t ford, now actually it at the
burnaby museum in dear lake park, but it wasnt allowed to
be parked on the street, then again it was mostly made out
of wood lol :)
we parked it in the garage but we lowered the roof on it to
make it fit :)

Hmm now begs the odd question, when my 88GT comes available for collector status, seeing as Lisa is the insurance holder on the blazer, will I have to put the 88 in her name or can she just insure it for me (insurance in her name, but car in my name) and get the discounted price.  

         Now back to the rules, Ken you said, paint might not matter at the club meeting?   Anyway we can confirm this?  Dang it I am going to have to go down and get the papers and look over them to see what is "allowed" and what is not allowed.     Lisa's 85 has all "85" parts except for the wheels and stereo, which could be changed back.  However her Red is not the factory red and the racing stripes are not factory. 

The body is an 85SE, but we put an 85GT nose and rear skin on it.   Hmm its probably way to far out there to let it go.

Just from some of my own observations of cars that have collector plates at the Cruise In, unless you get a a-hole inspector you can get away with almost any paint job

I was told you have to "normally" park your car on the registered private property. You're not supposed to normally park it on the street. I think an overnighter once in awhile would be hard to police, but the concern I got was the plates are easier stolen if parked on the street. If our cars are at a multi-day event, I would think a collector car would be impossible to not have overnight on the street.

As for paint, the application specifically asks if the car is stock including paint colour. From my queries with the British car collectors, they say the colour needs to be an available option colour for that year of car. Similar to the the rule about the radio and wheels, I guess. The 85 Fiero was only available in red, white or black. Silver/gray came later but I think those were classified as 86. Somebody can correct me on that if I'm wrong. But when I bought my car, silver was not yet available. As for Red on Lisa's car, she might have to take the Pegasus off her front hood. I'm pretty sure they won't notice a slight difference in shade of red. I noted that the application does mention decals. I'm hoping the Westcoast Fieros decal on my rear bumper won't mess up my application. But I did specifically get the Fiero 2M6 decal on my rear decklid to meet the requirement that my Fiero had one there when I bought the car. All 1985 Fieros had a Fiero 2m6 or Fiero 2m4 decal on the back. I suspect most ICBC inspectors would overlook that (the decal) as probably some of them weren't even born yet when the car was out.

Those with custom paint jobs likely have "agreed value" policies. They will negotiate a value for that custom paint job. I know that corvettes, where some have appreciated above their original purchase values are mostly "agreed value" policies.

I hope I'm not the only one doing this. I would like to be able to share stories of this process as it's new to all of us.

On the application for approval, one of the rules is rather subjective. It does mention that they (being somebody at ICBC) have to view your car as having collectible value. I guess that means a Cavalier...wait a minute, further back...a Chevette might not qualify. That sounds to me to mean there is no hard and fast rule on whether or not a car is considered collectible and that they would approve collector plates.

So when you apply, at least make your car presentable. I will await an answer.

Saw a guy with a Vega that had collectors plates, so..... I'm guessing we're a little more 'elite' than that????

any Vega that still exists and is driveable should be a collector car    I had one, actually a Pontiac Astre. They rusted even before leaving the showroom and burned oil at around 20,000 miles. Still, with time spent working on them EVERY weekend, they could be kept running until the Fiero's came out.

I'm still waiting.   

I just called my insurance agent. She submitted the application at the end of November and it takes 4 to 6 weeks. It's been just over 4 weeks so I still have my fingers crossed.

So my insurance agent just called. She had just got off the phone with ICBC and ICBC told her that since the car just became eligible this week, they just started looking at the application. Should be another 3 weeks or so before I know for sure.

The anticipation is killing me.

Any dents or missing paint would also disqualify you - they want restored cars, not junkers.

And they take the no driving the cars to or from work very seriously - you can lose the license easily.  One fool worked at a gas bar and used to park his collector plated car like it was on display on the lot.  Duh!

Though my car is not restored, it is in pretty good condition. Pretty well everything on it that's not wear and tear and some, is original from the factory 25 years ago. No dents or missing paint either.

The pictures I submitted were taken in September of 2009.

I just got a call from my insurance agent.   Collector plates have been approved for my car. The plates should arrive in a week or so.

As a side note, the insurance agent called again and said there was a hand written note attached to the approval asking me to remove the aluminum pedal covers and to resubmit another picture of the pedals as stock.

So for those of you considering applying for plates, make sure you remove pretty well all accessories you have attached to your Fiero.
